Addonics Cardbus to expresscard

I don't live too far from them. I wonder if they would let me come in and test it?

I'll order one today.

The product page specifically mentions Panasonic P2 several times, so my guess is that it would work. I've purchased Addonics products before, and have never had a problem with them being misrepresented.

My new notebook has the ExpressCard slot -- I'm tempted to buy one, but until there are P2 drivers for GNU/Linux, it won't do me much good...

My only disappointment is that the card specifications make no mention of being Mac friendly...only varying forms of Windows/Vista.

It does say that there are no drivers required for any of the Windows operating systems, and it is also supposed to work with Windows 98 -- that is a good sign for Mac compatibility. You may only need the drivers for the PCMCIA/PCCard that you use with the adapter.

I certainly like the size and weight of this thing much better than the Duel Systems adapter. Both obviously stick out the side of the laptop, but the Addonics adapter is much easier to slip into a notebook case and have with you at all times.

I've spoken with the Addonics representative and he has stated that for Mac compatibility, check back in the next couple of months.

I'll keep you guys updated.

Well, according to the press release, Addonics themselves is claiming compatibility with Mac OS.

Very interesting. I like the form factor a lot more than the Duel Adaptor; the long cable and big "sled" of the Duel makes it seem a tad clumsy. I've written to Addonics to see if they'll clarify the idea of whether it truly does allow one to offload a P2 card on an MBP that's running Mac OS.

Then, the information is conflicting.

The direct quote was from a Philip Vega, and he stated specifically that it was not Mac compatible currently, but to "check back before the end of a year when the product will be."

I e mailed him again, and asked for a clarification based on the MacWorld mention and press release.

I've communicated with Addonics on the issue.

The news is good and bad.

The good news is that the adapter does work with a MacBook Pro.

The bad news is that the only issue Addonics has is reading p2 cards on the Mac; the Windows side has no problems.

Stay tuned

Yeah, I also just got that response. The adapter can apparently be used as a P2 reader on a Windows system, but not on a Mac - yet. It works with other kinds of CardBus cards (so, maybe a Firewire port adapter card, etc) but not yet with a P2 card under MacOS.

So yes it works with P2 cards. And yes it works with MacOS. But as of now, it does not work with P2 cards and MacOS at the same time.

The solution-- run the MacBook Pro in Windows under BootCamp with MacDrive installed and copy to a Mac formatted drive.

Y'know, I wonder if the solution isn't even easier -- maybe they didn't have the P2 driver installed on the Mac? I'll write back and ask 'em, but with all the questions we get from owners who don't have the driver installed, I can easily see it happening with people who don't regularly use the HVX/P2 system.

Their tech guy admits that he doesn't know much about Macs.

Yes, they used the Intel driver, and it didn't mount.

I ask a dozen specific questions, and got no answer as yet

will report.

I just went to buy the $69.95 adaptor and postage to Australia was $45! Fedex was the only choice. Damn. I've emailed them to see if there is another was to post for any other out of towners interested.
