Adding Video with no sound to the timeline

i'm editing a film and working on a scene where there's back and forth dialogue

i'm trying to add reaction shots while actor #1 is talking to actor #2 and vice versa

currently i bring the whole thing on the timeline, it splits my sequence and i have to manually unlink the audio and fix the timeline, etc.

whats the best way to bring the footage on the timeline without bringing its associated audio too?

Deactivate your audio target tracks. As long as you drop your video to the target video layer, the audio won't follow.

You should always be using your target track settings, to make sure that dialog falls to the right places, music to the right places, sound beds, etc. Organizing the audio on the timeline is just as important as organizing your video layers.

how do i deactivate the audio tracks?

i clicked on the green audio symbol and all it did was mute the tracks but the video i dragged onto the timeline still came along with its associated audio.

i also tried locking the audio layers and nothing.

Click on where it says "a1" or a2" on your timeline and you will see them 'unpatch'.

OR

When setting in and out points in your viewer, use ctrl+I / ctrl+O to set points for JUST the video.

You can LOCK your audio tracks so you get those black lines through those tracks and when you bring a video clip onto the timeline the audio will not come with it. Just remember to unlock your audio tracks when finished. Just click the lock icon to lock or unlock it.

Deselect your video target and assign the audio target. Make sure that, when you drag and drop, you drop directly onto the target audio tracks.
