Adding Setup

I have my DVX set at "no setup", and I edit in Vegas with no setup (i.e., my low luminance level is tweaked using wfm with no setup). So, is an indicated luminance of IRE 0 (via my wfm in Vegas) get moved up at some point to IRE 7.5 when I burn a dvd and play on my NTSC TV? At what point is the setup added? Thanks all for any clarification.

The DVD player will do it. You should be producing, editing, and mastering all with zero setup. DVDs expect MPEG files with zero setup. When outputting an analog NTSC signal, the DVD player will add setup for you.

Thanks Barry. When I render to MPEG-2 in Vegas and then put together a dvd (in DVDA2), I have never considered adding (or not adding) setup. I am assuming that is where you are referring to as adding setup during mastering? I will go check Vegas and DVDA and see if I can figure out how setup may or may not be added at these stages.

No -- don't do anything. Master it all as zero setup.

The DVD player itself will add setup on playback. Your digital files should be encoded and mastered with no setup added at any point.

Yes, I understand that I should not add setup, but I am just wondering how to confirm that setup has not been added in Vegas or DVDA. I hope the answer is just to adjust the lowest luminance level using WFM in Vegas by making sure that it is no lower than just above the IRE=0 line (with the setup box unchecked), because this is how I have been doing it. Sorry if this is an incredibly dumb question, but I am still on the steep slope of the learning curve.

Okay, it's my turn to not understand what you're asking -- unless I'm mistaken, I don't believe there's any way to accidentally add setup... when you go to render out the MPEG-2 file, there aren't any options in Vegas to add setup. I also don't remember there being any option to add setup in DVD-A either. Is there?

You can configure the camera to add setup when recording, but that's a terrible idea. The setup box in the wfm doesn't change the video at all, just changes the way the waveform displays the video.

I'm sure others can weigh in and tell me if I've got this wrong, but I don't think there's any simple/easy way to just add setup...

They only way I can think of is the Broadcast Colors filter. If you don't use that, you should be fine.

Aren't Broadcast Colors just safe ones? MEaning you *should* use them when going for a broadcast output?

Go ahead...make me even MORE confused. :-)

OK, so the term "adding setup" (assuming that my DVX is not set to add setup) would mean that after I have adjusted my luminance in wfm so its lowest value is not crushed on the IRE=0 baseline in Vegas, I would add another 7.5 IRE units to this adjustment. I realize I should not actually do this (unless I did want to add setup), but I am just trying to make sure that I understand the term "adding setup" in Vegas so I am sure I am NOT doing it. Sorry guys for being so anal retentive :)
