Adding detail in post

I know many of us turning the detail way down to get more organic motion. Just out of curiosity, when a short calls for more detail, what are you guys using? "Pop" in MBL? "Sharpness" in FCP?

Thanks! Kyle

not sure what MBL is? and i don't use FCP...

in DS i have a custom pre-set i made with simple controls in the properties page for sharpen amount, depth and width

If you open it inside is a node based tree with a custom sharpen filter inside a mask created by by an edge detect filter, then keyed over the orignal.

And then i made a macro to link the properties page of the preset for the edge detect's pixel radius, then softness for the alpha channel, and finaly the sharpen filter's pixel depth... these are what i need 90% of the time, and if i need to go deeper i can expand the preset into a node based tree and use the draw mask tool and trackers built into the matte tool.

I keep this preset in my main user tool bar as i take advantage of it very often!

Works really well, but dependant upon haveing a DS to host it.

If you're talking about applying mild sharpening to an image in post, I recommend against using FCP's built-in Unsharp Mask. After Effects and Color have much better sharpening filters, in my opinion. FCP is just too gritty and aggressive. I don't know if Magic Bullet Looks has Unsharp Mask options ,though.

Yes, the key here is an unsharp mask with your threshold set high enough that you're not enhancing artifacts and/or noise. And, to use it with restraint.

I've never seen any sharpening features in MBL, and I haven't used Final Cut Pro in five or six or seven years.

What NLE are you using?
