Add a rosete to the FS100 Side Handle

I'm trying to figure out a way to get the side handle of my FS100 in a better position and it occured to me you might be able to make a rosette the bolts on to the handle so you could then use existing accessories to mount it. Anyone have any ideas or leads on something like this?

I mount the FS100 Sony grip with a female 1/4 Stubclamp on 15mm front rods. It's worked well for over a year now. Adam Wilt has also had success with this route and mentions it in a review linked on our site below.

The Sony grip is made of plastic however so you can't successfully bolt to it or modify it. It really all boils down to whether you plan on using front rods, if so its a snap.

I've tried a similar thing bolting the handle to a female threaded block like this one: http://jag35.com/singlerodclamp.html
but because the torsional forces are the same direction as the threading it wiggles a little bit. I was thinking, why couldn't you make a female threaded rosette that has a back that is exactly the shape of the FS100 handle including the locator pin? The thumbscrew would have to be on the other side but in my mind it should work but I've never manufactured anything.

I could mill these up and back them with a rosette. (no male or female with rosettes- standard is- 60 teeth at 60 degrees, hirth tooth gear)
I'd charge $125 apiece including rosette. If 10 people care to pony up a 50 deposit I'll make 10. I suspect these are just a modifcation to our existing RoseClamps.

Wait, what's the rosette for? I think djkarn's point is just that he wants a 1/4-20 female threaded block PLUS a hole for the locator pin of the grip, to prevent the grip from rotating and thus coming loose. Basically something that looks exactly like the grip connector on the FS100 body. All is needed is an extra hole.

I've tried mounting the grip to a 15mm rod via a Berkey System female threaded accessory block, same ideas as the jag35. But again the problem is the grip body rotates inevitably, and no matter how much you tighten the screw the grip comes loose.

well he asked for a rosette - I make parts- I'm not a camera therapist! ;)

My Stubclamp- just by freak chance- snugs up against the locking pin and prevents rotation. I've used my FS100 sony grip on rods like this for a year, hard shooting sometimes.
it's not perfect - but it works. I dont like the cheap plastic feel of the grip but I like the button under my thumb and so if you want a fix it's $55 in stock.

yeah i know, i think his use of "rosette" was a bit of a red herring.

but caleb, i actually tried your solution too, but in my case the grip would still rotate and come loose. and worse, the locator pin would rub against the metal and gradually wear out. maybe i just didn't tighten the screw enough, but still i think it'd be great if you could make something that has a hole for the locator pin already. it can't be that hard!

btw off-topic: it'd be great if you could post some pictures of your shotgrip base plates for FS700 and C300. i have your shotgrip for fs100 and know (and love) how it fits to the camera, but i'm curious about the other cameras too since i'm going to upgrade soon.

aly324, As I said it works but its not a product- just a happy accident. I do torque the thing down with pliers- hard. I will see about making an actual product piece. I agree it should not be hard. I have not done it because mounting metal to plastic is sub optimal - but might have an idea talking about it here. As for the pics of new ShotGrip base plate - they are coming soon. We have them finalized but are snowed under with CineGrips still. prob around 60 days away. Hopefully less.

Nice to hear that ShotGrip is working!

I did mean rosette. I would like to adjust the angle of the handle and the way that happens on the Sony grip is finnicky. Looking into it further though, I realized that 15mm clamps with a rosette are designed for the bolt to be on the handle. There might be some out there with clearance for a thumb screw but none were immediately apparent.

That said something like what aly324 was talking about seems like it might suit the same purpose more simply. Like you said, it's not great but it works and I really like having the record button under my thumb.

Ok! A rosette by any other name - would it smell as sweet? apology to the bard. Um, a rosette is by far the best way to go but the little buggers are expensive. The piece I'm going to make
will work with either rosette or sony's erm, 'design' ;)

Here is an image that seems on topic

and dont forget when your hand is under the lens center, your elbow is tucked into your body.

This is a new approach. no one else does it. a Dovetail mount.

everyone else throws your hand a couple inches outboard of the lens. try it right now. move your fist under an imaginary lens center. feel your elbow?
Now pivot your fist out to the right beside the lens and then out a few inches more. Feel it torque your elbow and shoulder?

yeah?
