GH2 Adapt Canon EF lenses for Panasonic GH2 micro four-thirds (m4/3)

Less expensive adaptor/Electonic adaptor

Less expensive adaptor/Electonic adaptor

I too have had good luck with Fotodiox adaptors and extension tubes to use with Canon lenses fitted to a GH2. Their products are very reasonably priced and of good quality. I bought one of their 14-blade adjustable iris units for $70 or $80 dollars on Amazon. Does anyone make an adaptor that puts Canon lenses on a GH2 which allows manual setting of iris and on-lens image stabilization?

Oops! I didn't notice the second page of this thread. Red Rock DOES make an adaptor letting the operator to set iris manually. But $545? Really? That does seem like a lot, but having been in the video industry since 1986, prices should never shock me. I just wish this device allowed the lens' image stabilization to function properly, too.

I have found fotodiox adapters to be the best of the inexpensive models. I have some nikon-eos adapters from both fotodiox and bower (the bower being $50-60), and I can tell you there is a big difference in quality and finish between the two.
The fotodiox was good enough to work perfectly, but the more expensive adapter really felt like a part of the original lens, like it was permanent. Yet, comes off smoothly and easily.

The question is, does that matter? When it came to buying new adapters for the GH2, I didn't even hesitate to buy another fotodiox. It just works and for the money its didn't make sense to go with anything else.

I meant for the built-in iris to use EF lenses. I've got a Kipon on me now, wondering if the fotodiox is any better. Whatever issues the concept brings doesn't really bother me to tell you the truth, or at least I haven't seen anything to scare me away from using the Kipon. If anything, I like how the bokeh remains smooth and larger oof lights stay circular. It's kinda cool to me, anyway.

I have a dumb Fotodiox EOS adapter and it has no play (unlike my Kipon Nikon adapter). I don't know how the one with the manual iris works, but it should be noted that their product page lists it as being incompatible with EF-S. Does that hold for the Kipon EOS adapter?

Wait a minute,
I was replying last night from my phone, so I didn't capture the full context of the discussion here. Is there a Fotodiox adapter with iris blades? Because I'm under the impression there are only simple ring adapters from them. They fit pretty well and do a good job adapting the lens system, but do NOTHING as far as controlling aperture. That needs to come off the Canon body already set...

Right, like that. There are actually a few threads on the forum already explaining this (no need to plug your own blog), but its good info right there. I'll admit I never touched the DOF preview button on my Canons until I got a GH2.

The only problem with this is that:
1) you need a Canon body around
2) you must remove the lens every time you change the aperture

#1 isn't such a problem for me, as my gear bag is home to both my GH2 and T2i. I like keeping a Canon body around for stills and occasional B-roll, so as long as I will be using a constant aperture for an entire shoot, its really just an extra 10 seconds of setup time to set.

Now, if you ONLY have a GH2, it gets more complicated. The problem with adapters that sport their own iris blades (like the Kipon) is that they can cause vignetting since they are outside the lens barrel. It can work, but ideally you want to adjust the adapter's own iris, which expensive adapters like the birger will (eventually) do.
Here's the thing, though- it might be more worthwhile to invest in an old or even broken cheap Rebel XT camera body or something. I've seen old Canon DSLRs on ebay with bad sensors for less than $100. All you need is for the lens interface to still work, and you can have something around to just set EF lens apertures.

Seems kind of convoluted compared to an aperture ring or Nikon's manual level controls, but if you really need to share lenses, its an option. As long as you are aware of its caveats.

From another thread:

I bought a dumb one and I'm using a Kipon adapter with its own iris. I imagine that there are more than a dew thugs bad about the Kipon behind the rear element iris method, like vignette certain lenses and perhaps strange bokeh distortion but honestly I like it. It's interesting that the bokeh is best perfectly circle shaped as you stop down, which looks quite "pretty", especially for interviews.

However, I'm also going to go to a pawn or thrift shop to buy an old EF/eos mount Body for like 30.00 or whatever. That way I can just open or close the iris on the camera body then. Strap it onto the dumb mount. It's janky, but I like the EF primes enough to try it.

I'm using the ultrasonic 28/1.8, 50/1.4, and 85/1.8. Like them all wide open for video.

This is what I get for butting into a conversation. :) Kholi is already very much aware of everything I just said. I should have seen that coming.

This is the adapter I'm using, as you can see from my picture above, the mount supports the weight of the zoom instead of the camera.
I don't think m43 zooms get as heavy as some of the canons

I was thinking about getting one of those adapters for some heavy FD lenses- my EF lenses are relatively light and plastic compared to the solid metal vintage ones. From that very ebay seller, actually- but I wasn't sure if their adapters were any good. I know some of these cheapo ebay adapters are priced too-good-to-be-true for a reason, so I was hesitant.
Are you happy with that one?

I'll probably try that Fotodiox EOS adapter if anyone is interested in how I find that it performs. I have the dumb Fotodiox adapter and it seems really solid, moreso than the Kipon Nikon (so I'll probably also try the Fotodiox version of that one too).

yeh i like it ... had an issue with it when it first arrived - its was awful tight and the pressure I needed to apply when turning my lens made m think I would break my lens. I contactd the seller and he emailed me a jpeg showing me instructions - that the tightness/play on the turn thread could be adjusted. Works perfect.

Cool. I'm getting one (in FD mount, at least). Thanks!

Hi all.
Looking for a really snug fit dumb EOS to M4/3 adapter (GH4 with Leitax EOS hard mounted Leicas).
Thanks for helping
