Actual 16:9 DV resolution

Can someone explain to me, the actual resolution of 16x9 DV?

according to FCP it is around 853x480.. what is the point of shooting anamorphic really?

no matter what, the resolution is downrez to normal NTSC DV 720x480... which means shooting with the anamorhpic adapter doesn't actually do much... You are adjusting the image digitally...

is there some sort of flag or extra option in the DV codec that by-passes the normal 4x3 720x480 res and stuffs more info into the image? or is it wishful thinking on my part..?

and on that note... why is it damn near impossible to find comparison picts of something shot with the DVX anamorphic adapter vs without? Do people horde them for some unknown purpose?

correct me if I am wrong with my info...

edit: wow I need to get sleep...

Re: Actual 16:9 DV resolution

ALL DV is 720x480. There is no such thing as 853x480 in DV, that's just how FCP scales the video to display it on a computer screen. Internally, in the DV codec, it's all always 720x480, all the time, always.

The thing that changes is the SHAPE of the pixels, not the number of pixels. In widescreen DV, those 720 pixels are interpreted as being wider than they are tall, in 4:3 DV those same 720 pixels are interpreted as being taller than they are wide.

But it's all always 720x480.

Re: Actual 16:9 DV resolution

right on, its always 720x480.

..alternately , if your looking for square pixel dimensions for DV you should use 864 x 480 for 16:9 or 648 x 480 for 4:3

neither is mathematically correct.. they are not supposed to be, but those are the actual square pixel dimensions anyway if your importing square pixel files.
