Action Safe

Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
Hey guys,

Just editing a Fishing show for WFN, and I got 19 shows.

The first 6 are SD, and the rest after that are HD.

Lets just talk about the first 6 for now.

I'm building pop ups for the show, in AE, then I carry them over to FCP.

Where is the safest place to put all my pop ups and stuff. The director of the show will show me where to put them (bottom left, bottom right) but how far is to far so that viewers on tube TV's, or HD tv's, won't be able to see the pop up cause maybe it's cut off.

Should I stay inside the First safe box? Cause there's a text box after that.

I never really paid attention to this as I haven't done anything for Television before. Now it's all coming together:)

Any advice would be cool.

Thanks,

Robbie

You might want to go inside the Title Safe Box with some extra safe room. I have found some TVs will cut you off even then.

Yes, all graphics and overlays should fall inside title-safe.

Local commercials bother me... a lot. One of the biggest issues we have here is that the yokels who shoot and edit the worst of them pay no attention to title-safe, and often have their text overlays pushing even the limits of the action-safe. Needless to say, there's plenty of poorly-edited stuff out there with text that bleeds off the screen.

If you have a true broadcast/prodcution monitor with Underscan, take it out of Underscan to double-check. This won't crop the image as bad as some really cheap consumer CRTs out there, but can still give you a decent idea of where the title-safe content will fall in the end. Capt. Quirk's suggestion of a little extra pad is also a good idea... it doesn't take much, though.

Truth is, some cheap sets are going to crop too much anyway, and if a network's bug is going to be halfway out, there's not much you can do.

Ha ha,
I always yell at the TV when those furniture commercials come on and the text is off the screen.

"You idiots that's what a title-safe is for".

Then my wife tells me to stop yelling at the TV, and proceeds to tell me I'm going to be a cranky old man.

Thank you, that was the first real laugh I've had today :)
