Action! Nuclear Submarines! Fishing!

Here's the stupid pilot for our stupid 5 minute internet TV show, based loosely off the model of Knight Rider, Airwolf, and other similar '80s action shows. It's got some flaws for sure but it was all shot in 2 days, edited in 3, adheres to a strict 5 minute time limit, and even manages to have some jokes in it. It also has a few car mount shots. So! I semi-proudly present...

Fisherman 4.0

Comments and regrets welcome.

I don't really get the story but everything else is great. How did you do that arctic scene. It was great. The sound in some of the shots are a little to low. The titles are great. The color correction is also really good. But i really want to know how you did that arctic scene.

Haha, that arctic scene is about the most hack job VFX I've ever done, and I'm honestly shocked it looks as good as it does. Since we had no budget and no time, I was unable to shoot on an actual greenscreen stage... so instead we shot it on the roof of a very tall parking garage. I set up a white blanket and we used the SKY as a bluescreen. It sounds ridiculous but it actually works pretty well, I was shocked to discover. The rest of it is just a quick matte painting, CG snow mixed in with some "real" snow.

Nice compositings, how did you do the props, submarine (I saw some people walking on it) aircrafts, etc ? Post the original artic footage :)

Great for the production time,
Ulisses

That is some really funny **** - and the technical backs it up.

I married your ex-wife... I didn't tell you that? I mean... everyone knew!

man that was cool, what software did you use to do the submarine scene ? (and where did you get the sub footage?)

thanks, GREAT JOB!

Maybe I'll post up a tutorial on the whole submarine thing. Really it just follows my basic rule for cost-effective VFX: build a base on simplicity, then add detail. People will buy it.

The submarine is a picture I grabbed from google (of a submarine in water), masked, photoshopped, and color timed. The people walking around on it are 4 different clips of ME, filmed against that same parking garage skyline. Other than that it's just two 3d solids in AE and one layer of stock smoke imagery. Total time to make the whole background was maybe an hour? All just Photoshop and After Effects.

But yeah, in a few days I'll post up some "before" shots. It's a fun comparison. Glad you guys like it, I'm happy to answer any questions on it.

oh, and ulisses, all the aircraft are real, shot at Santa Monica airport. We just found an open fence and went out on the tarmac. No one bothered us. Maybe I shouldn't be telling people that. ;)

As for the props, I'm not sure what you mean.

I loved it. Creative and funny stuff guys! This is just my humble opinion and lame contribution for what it's worth...but the main character is interesting and could really be developed into something slightly more entertaining, loveably-insane, and over-the-top. With his tweed hat and blind ambition to fish the world dry, he has some interesting potential...imagine him with an accent, a unique and quirky fishing rod, a few fly's in the tweed hat. Think Leslie Nielsen meets Tom Baker meets James Bond meets fishing angler Kevin VanDam. geez...what an insane but interesting character.

Just some random thoughts...I loved your concept.

ProfD.

thanks dougspice,

a Mini Tutorial, and a few before grabs would be awesome, thanks for sharing, it's really appreciated!

Wow that was hilarious! I loved it. You have a ton of good stuff going on here, funny well shot, I love when he rips the guys arm off, classic! The only work that I think it needs is a little sound sweetening and you are set!!(just for some low audio in points)

sorry Derrick, shooting all this week... in fact going to bed now for a 5am wakeup. next week I'll put some stuff together for you guys.

That would be spiffy, Dougspice. The short looked great, and was pretty damn funny. Looking foward to some kind of tutorial when you have the time.
