...You may get the win just for starting the thread that could begin the demise of Penguin's out of control posting habits. I just hope he is highlighting everything now and reads this. Bark like my dog if you read this Penguin.

Bark! Bark! Wait...out of control?

So does that make me the greatest person in the universe?

No, but congrats on finding that. You are the second person.

No. Because I was the first to respond to him.

Remind me to add "liar" to my increasingly larger list of negative personality traits of yours.

Oh, and don't think I didn't notice that hidden remark. I would add "*****" to the list too, but that's been on there for a long time.

Sure, why not? is yes. That would be cool. I wouldn't necessarily visit, but I'm for it

Ehh is take it or leave it. I don't care one way or the other.

They both sound equally indifferent to me. Either you think there should be one, or you think there shouldn't. If you are indifferent, the vote doesnt really matter.

No sir. I never said I PMed you, I immediately responded in my sig line.

Re: Mattykins. Matt, my friend, you need to get some better spirits because that generic Vodka is gooping up your circuits. That is one of the goofiest posts ever.

...No sir. I never said I PMed you, I immediately responded in my sig line...

Ah, my bad then. I noted your rude and disrespectful signature, but did not consider it a response until now. I understand and would like to respectfully withdraw my accusation that you are a liar. The ***** remark still stands, however.

When you do your poll, you can have "yes" or "no". Mine has four. That's what I wanted, so that's why it has four.

That's fine, but you gave up possible votes to 2 other categories. You went from 50% odds down to 25%.

MY poll will certainly be better thought out. (I'm just gonna have ONE option - for whatever it is I want. Probably root beer.)

I've been thinking about a poll for about a week now. It was planned out. I think it accurately depicts peoples ideas for a new forum.

I don't like "yes" or "no" polls. If I see one, I don't vote because it doesn't accurately depict a valid choice for a lot of the people who would possibly vote. What if something thinks it would be a cool idea? That would be choice 2, "Sure, why not". It's not a "yes" or "definitely". It's "Yeah, that would be cool." I want the poll to be as accurate as possible. :dankk2:

It would be very easy to talk me into this, given that I love acting... :)

But, I want to hear from everyone on this of course, since the site is for you guys.

What I would love about an acting forum:
Acting is very much tied to filmmaking.

There may not be much insight into actors, acting and their process from those who don't do it.

I could see a lot of the traffic initially being from directors. That's a good thing.

I could see some actors on the site coming out of the closet, maybe some more finding it down the road as a result.

I could see fest participants being more able to find actors that want to participate in their films, and hopefully up the quality of the films in the fest as a whole. The acting (on the whole) is one of the weaker aspects of the fest films... At least in my opinion.

What I don't want though.... What I'm not a big fan of, is creating a new sub-forum whenever someone wants one, or because it seems like a good idea, and then having it be virtually nothing but crickets.

I do see a home for some actor types to pontificate and such together in an acting forum... I would imagine though, that the majority of the traffic here on this site, would come in the form of directors asking questions about actors, acting, directing actors, etc... That's a good thing though, in my opinion. Theatre, Film, and TV are very collaborative processes.

Anyways... keep the poll going.

later,
Jason

Penguin and I have been working out what content we'd like to see in the acting forum. One thing that I think would be cool would to have people from other acting sites (there really aren't that many good ones from what I've found) join the site and have a place to hang out... even learn a few things about the technical issues involved.

I also think it would be a nice place for actors to showcase their talent. Have a reel? Great! Post it in the acting forum. Want to have headshots and a resume available? Start a sticky so people can post headshots and resume. Have you got the part in a play? Great, let people know in a thread.

I just think it's strange that there's a writing forum but no acting forum.

Third option: "ehh..."

If there is one thing you have covered here, it is accuracy or opinion.

I also think it's a great idea, Jason. I think it could also potentially be a draw for actors that are not on this site but are looking for a place to not only find quality shorts and other projects to act in, but then have a reason to stick around as well.

Tommy, if you could add an option to accurately record my position, which is "Yeah, I guess that might be an okay idea but I'm not really one for internet forum polls", then I would feel like my true thoughts can be counted. :dankk2:

I'll keep that in mind for the next poll... :dankk2:

I like this. I am not an actor but I have fired them on occasion and I think next time I fire an actor they should have a place to talk bad about me.

So yes I vote yes.

We just need to be careful, if penguin has one more place to post he may be lost for days in DVXUSER and forget to eat and could die of malnutrition.

So as long as we agree to keep penguin safe from post traumatic post disorder I am in.

Seriously, This would be awesome. If we could draw more actors this would be a one stop to find a team for fests and other projects.

It's nice to know people care. :) Tommy and I HAVE been talking about this. For me I come here and I participate in the fests and I hang in the café. Now, when I want to talk serious about my niche in this community I can go to the writing forum. That satisfies half of it, but I would really like to prop up Penguin the actor. I think an acting forum would be good for that. Like Tommy said, we have a few ideas of what could be posted there.

Let's do this...

I think it would fantastic. I think it would be a nice addition, however, it would also be useful to have a sub section in which locations are pointed out as I'm sure you'll have actors from all parts of the globe signed up. Just a thought. In addition, I found this site through some word of mouth and it's a great resource. I'd love to see an actor's sub forum added, I'd definitely recommend it to other actor friends of mine.

Looking forward to seeing something develop. And yes, I voted.

Yes, absolutely 100% YES.

Story + Actors = Movie. The better those two elements, the better the movie. I'd settle for a worse director, worse dp, worse set designer etc. for a bump up in the quality of the script or actors.

It would be awesome as a resource here on dvxuser. You can never have too much actor-centered activity. I go to plays, amateur productions etc. for one reason - not to find a 'talented' director or dp, but to find actors.

Actors are a paradox - seemingly here in LA everyone is an actor, you are drowning in actors... except when you have a production going - all of a sudden there are NO actors to be had (even having money is no guarantee you'll get the actors you need or want).

I have a couple of simple rules - I don't compromise on the quality of the script, and I try not to compromise on the quality of actors. It's a heck of a lot easier to not compromise on the script, but when it comes to the actor... man, that's hard - really, sometimes there's this actor or no actor, and you're faced with a horrific choice of not going forward with the production, or breaking your rule of not compromising on actors... so you compromise, and live to regret it. An actor who is a good fit for your movie, whom you can afford, who has good communication with you, and who has good working habits (not a flake) - man, you just found a miracle!

So yes, a forum - stat. Anything to increase the supply and quality of actors! And btw. this is why I'm so depressed about the recent SAG - Producers negotiations. We need to protect actors!

Looks like the current count is 38-3.

One of the biggest problems in the DVXUser fests, is poor acting. Anything that can remedy that can't be bad...

Hell yes! Why would people say no to this? If it's there, as a sub forum, then people can easily avoid it if they really want. What difference is it really going to have anyway? One more sub forum for people to talk about stuff, if anything it'll bring more actors to the forum. It's not like it;s a big job adding it or anything...Control Panel>new forum>done....

Anyone who calls themselves a filmmaker should be interested in acting...at the very least. Acting is usually one of the worst part of student/low budget films etc and usually the direction of the actors and the lack of understanding of the craft is one of the big reasons why. With bad acting/direction of actors the film will suck no matter what.

We should definitely have the forum. That will bring more actors here, it will give them a chance to talk about their craft, and all the things involved - I find it interesting that people would even think of saving "what would they talk about?"

I'm not really an actor but I know that if I want to be a good director and not fall into the trap that sadly way too many filmmakers do and be a technical wanker for the rest of my life, then I'm going to have to know a thing or two about acting. And an acting forum would help that - watching actors talk, filmmakers could ask actors questions, I guess it could coincide with the directing forum a bit more. And the idea is that having a seperate sub-forum for actors would bring actors here! And that's a good thing!

On a seperate note I'm reading this book called Directing Actors, and it's really good!

Chris

So, I made a banner for my signature to promote this idea and hopefully wrangle up some more votes (Texas accent not included).

Does it seem too harsh to you? Someone said it might be and maybe I should take out the part of a film being nothing without good acting. Maybe I should change it to "WITHOUT ACTORS YOUR FILM IS NOTHING" or something like that. Give me some feedback and I will rearrange it tomorrow.

Let's see if we can get this approved!
