I'm currently watching this movie now and I must say the cinematography is simply amazing..... Don't know how these guys got such a beautiful image from this camera (5d) but man this looks beautiful. Will update this post after I finish watching the movie, but first impressions are "WOW"!

That's because it was mostly shot on film, with the 5D being the POV shots from the helmet cams and pretty much relegated to action scene work.

According to Shane Hurlbut, that's not true at all. 75-80% of the finished film was shot on the 5D2.

Why do you post such nonsense? It was said by Shane Hurlbut himself that 80% of the movie was shot on 5d's.... It's like man you sound like a real hater, how about you go make a movie....

Other than camera fanboys who really cares what cameras were used to shoot any movie. Bottom line either you were entertained or you were not entertained no matter what camera was used.

chill out folks... geez...

bought it on bluray a couple of weeks ago... Haven't had a chance to watch it yet, though...

Camera does matter, because it this shows what is capable with a 5d markii it means a lot. Of course lighting, pro colorist and very expensive lenses helped, but I was just truly amazed to see how beautiful the image looked. Now onto Gary Huff if you say the "action" scenes then I say great, because most of the movie is action....

Finally the story/acting was ok, nothing really oscar worthy. What truly shined in the film to me was the photography, from lighting to framing. Really loved how each scene had multiple angles that actually made sense and how the camera was used in a lot of first person view perspective. In a early scene in the movie when they took the woman hostage and rolled her up in a rug the camera rolled with her & it just looked so amazing that I never really remember ever seeing something like that before.

IMHO I truly feel that the cinematographers for this film did an amazing job and it deserves to at least be nominated for an award. If you haven't seen it, I suggest everyone to pick it up.... Story was ok, but what shined was the photography, loved it!

Wow.....you'd swear someone talked about someone else's mother up in here...geez. I have to second what Gary stated.... At least that is what I read a good while back. I have not seen the film but from the trailers it looks good.

Maybe 70% of the movie was filled with action. 20% was dialoge or beauty shots.

One thing I did notice in the trailer was jello...jello...jello. So if they did use the 5D for action shots...then that explains it. Not putting the camera down (please). It just explains to me that the 5D was in fact used for action shots.

I'm not allowed to speak freely here so I wont go into detail about what I thought of the film except to say that the action looked good and everything else made me cringe. Peeperly speaking there were a bunch of shots that were way out of focus which there really is no excuse for shooting with the 5D or not.

Don't stone me but I bought the blu ray this past weekend and it didn't amaze me visually at all. High contrast scenes (especially at the beginning on the buildings) really showed the dslr's weakness in dr, alot of the convo scenes have missed focus, micro jitters everywhere, overall it just reeked of "filmed on a dslr". Content and the creativity of the (you can only do this with a small camera action shots) were good tho so I guess thats all that matters. Maybe I just had high expectations but going from watching the girl with the dragon tattoo blu ray to this made it seem like going from blu ray to vhs and after watching this years camera shootout I feel like they should be a bit more evenly matched.

We've come along way since the 30p 5D MKII days. You could get much better results now from a MKIII, hacked GH2, or D800 thankfully. And there's always the FS100 and 700, and the BMCC is just around the corner.

"I spent two grand on this camera, it better be good!" seems to be the implication when people get bent out of shape about this topic. Not that you can't do good work with the 5D2, just don't look at a film and confuse the "shot on 35mm" portions with being 5D Mark II and then wonder why your stuff doesn't look like that.

Hurlbut has said that 70% of what was shot was on the 5D Mark II. That doesn't mean that 70% of the shots in the finished film are 5D Mark II. Shooting action requires a lot of coverage, and so if the 5D was used exclusively for action scenes (and for the special angles during action scenes in particular) it would skew the numbers in its favor. You don't need that much coverage for a 2-person dialogue scene in a quiet moment.

So if you want to judge the quality of the 5D Mark II in a professional Hollywood production, take a look at the action sequences. But please don't confuse the gorgeous wide shots or finely detailed closeups during more intimate moments with the 5D, because you would probably be wrong.

Gary I have the Blu-ray and it's very easy to tell what was 5D and what wasn't. A large majority of the movie was 5D, it's clear as day. 5D looks great in its own way but the difference between that and the 35mm film scenes is easy to spot. Even a ton of the dialog scenes were 5D...

Personally I loved the way the film looked & love the angles. Very few films that I have seen give all of the different views this film did & I am a hard critic. Personally like I said the story was ok, but I really thought the movie looked truly awesome. Seeing it on a large tv on blu-ray looked great to me. A lot better than many other movies I have seen recently. Also many shots that were out of focus were done purposely to tell the story.

So yeah go get that movie and watch, truly awesome photography.

I know somebody is going to read that and call bull and go crazy on this guy...but seriously that's out of the mouths of the filmmakers, that's not him speculating lol. I had heard it before at some point, perhaps an article...and then heard it again during the movies commentary. Whether or not you still think it's bull or just stupid is up to you.

Just trying to stop any fires before they start. ;)

A motivated out of focus shot works. I couldn't see any motivation for those shots and they just distracted me...but given that it was just a recruitment video I guess it's ok.
