Acheiving a deep depth of field

using one of those lenses along with the ETC mode is essentially the same as using a smaller sensor camera with smaller sensor glass, thereby stretching out the dof. that solution will also get you a sweet power zoom! It's not perfect, but does get more impressive results that you might expect
Small catch: no ETC mode on the AF100

No, that would just make the lens longer and not change the effective sensor size, resulting in the same DOF behaviors. The B4 zoom might indeed work, it just wouldn't act any differently (in terms of focus depth) than the 45-175 or 14-140 at equivalent length and aperture.

Shoot far from the stage and still achieve deep field of the depth.

Again, the reason I suggested purchasing a smart phone app like pCAM, is because you seem to lack a basic understanding of photographic laws. Using an app like this is not only a handy reference on location, but also a valuable learning tool which you can carry with you at all times.

For example….. Shooting with your AF100, If you were to use a focal length of 85mm to shoot a stage from 70' away, at an f stop of f4.0, your field of view would be 14' 8", and your depth of field would be 25' 6".

Same shot with an f stop of f2.8 and your depth of field is 17' 9".

Same shot with an f stop of f1.4 and your depth of field is 8' 9".

Switch to a 200mm lens from the same spot, and your field of view is now 6' 2.7", and with an f stop of f5.6 your depth of field becomes 6' 3.3".

At an f stop of f4.0 your depth of filed is now 4' 5".

At an f stop of f2.8 your DOF is now 3' 1.5".

Thanks David. I did look up this app in Play Store and I could not find it. May be I need to see if it is a iOS app.

i think you're mislead by the macro, it has nothing to do with far away subjects, the lens really isn't your problem on the DOF front, it's physics.

you'd save yourself a bunch of headache by renting or buying a camera better suited t these purposes, there's plenty of capable video cameras under $1000.

one other option is to go the b4 zoom lens route https://vimeo.com/20171062

Thanks Darren. This b4 lens route looks very promising and cost effective as well. Now I need to figure out which one to buy. Most of the ones I found on eBay are non HD lenses and I am wondering should I look for HD lens ? Including the adapter I might be able to get the lens under 500 bucks. I am excited to see this and I hope I find some thing nice that is not totally beat up.

yes i should have clarified, it would physically work, but without ETC wouldn't get the desired deep DOF, but would be a crackin power zoom solution.

don't worry about HD marketing, the SD lenses can be great. here's what i tried on the C100, which needs even more TC than an M43 camera with a b4 lens, and closed down looks darn good
