Hey there,
I've been filming sunsets and clouds in stop motion but i find the reds don't really come out as well. Is there a setting i could fiddle with to boost the reds a little?
Cheers,
n
You can get the reds quite vibrant. First, as David said, look at the Chroma Level, cranking that up will boost the saturation of all colors. Second, look at the Matrix options. Normal = fairly muted colors, Fluo = all colors really boosted up (except greens) and Cine = all colors really boosted up (including greens).
Finally, you may want to adjust the COLOR TEMP setting, dropping it a notch or two will tint your video towards red tones.
But I have noticed that when you do WB off a bluish card to get warm tones the noise level goes to hell :
Would it be safer to use filter 85's or 81's series to warm up your footage or post? Anybody has any other ideas?
Well... depends on what look you're going for. If you want to tint your whole video towards red, then yes, a warm card (or using the COLOR TEMP) setting will do that.
If you want to leave the overall tint alone, and just boost the vibrancy of the reds, that's where you'd want to juice up the Chroma Level and/or set it on FLUO or CINE matrix.
I thought, in my experience, that Color Temp was a yellow-blue shift and Color Phase was a Green-Red shift (tint). Might not playing with Color Phase have a greater affect on reds?
Also consider a filter. Most filter mfgs now deliver what they call red enhancers or redhancers. They filter out a narrow band of orange and may also include polarizers. The effect is most dramatic on autumn foliage, but my also help with your sunsets.
Excellent point -- I forgot about the red intensifier, and I even have one of those! Works well.
As far as color temp, color temp shifts between orange-red and blue. Phase shifts between green and purple/magenta. Color Temp is a fairly significant shift, Color Phase is a minor shift.
