Glad to see Jonah Hill got a nomination. His is the kind of understated performance that often goes unnoticed...Appalled to see Bridesmaids get a nomination for Best Screenplay. Some amusing skits but a horribly written script. And looks like Spielberg got stiffed for Tin Tin.

I just realized how many movies I haven't seen recently. I've seen 2 of all of the listed above movies.

Now had any of the Tinkerbell movies been on here, I would definitely be able to help out.

Agreed on both counts. Also glad to see Gary Oldman get a well-earned nomination, as well as Rooney Mara. I didn't understand J.C. Chandor's nom for Margin Call screenplay. The movie had some good writing, but the whole thing was essentially one person explaining to another person, who explains to another person, who explains to another person, exactly what caused the financial meltdown... and by the end of it, I knew less about what happened than before I saw the movie.

I can't help but noticing that Ryan Gosling got snubbed again too!

What the hell, that dude bring's it, and he had so many movies this year....

weird

I thought between Drive, Ides of March, and Crazy Stupid Love that at least a supporting actor nod was in order.

But then again I thought the same way about his lack of nomination for Blue Valentine last year.

'Drive' was just too contrived to get a nomination.

Also, going by RT scores which seem to be the standard in this business, only 3 of 9 Best Picture nominees have a better critic rating than Drive. The average RT score of the 9 Best Picture nominees is 83.7% -- Drive is 93%.

The film had its contrivances, like any film if you really analyze them, but Gosling at least deserved a nomination. The intensity of his performance was unmatched in any film I've seen this year, and I've seen a lot.

The Artist and Tree Of Life are the likely contenders for Cinematography...hard to pick between those, very different styles. One a beautiful example of Old Hollywood and painting in black and white, and the other a beautiful organic looking movie that's basically a demo reel shot in every setup. I think The Tree Of Life should take it though, gorgeous...

Wow. That was a lot of work dude.

Anyway, I have not seen 'Extremely Loud etc' but I'm sure that those critics are right and its an Oscar trolling schmaltz fest (clearly a successful one if that was their target).

That does not change the fact that 'Drive' was contrived. I kept getting the feeling that someone was just trying too hard to be stylish and unusual. All of the quirky little details (the titles, the jacket, the music) just seemed a little too strained and manufactured for that purpose, like it didn't seem natural the way quirky little details would appear in a Wes Anderson film (for example).

The film also revolves around a rather large coincidence which takes you out of the story somewhat.

Quentin Tarantino released his list of favorite films for 2011, and listed Drive in the 'Nice Try' category; that about sums it up.

I'd say Lubezki has it in the bag. Love that guy.
