Academic

Heya Film.

Acedemic versions usually are for learning/teaching purposes only. If a school taught Video production and wanted to use Vegas as their platform, they get a discounted price for the Acedemic version. It is NOT meant to be used in a business to make money. That's the real difference. As far was what they can do, the two are usually identical, with full capabilities.

Yes, as a student you are allowed to purchase Acedemic versions of software. You usually have to prove you are a student by submitting a copy of your enrollment ie, class schedule.

As for a Film Festival, if there were any awards given to the winner, or if there was any money involved of any kind, I think that would be a problem. But, buying it as a student for educational purposes is fine. It would depend on the festival, and your submission.

I would say go ahead and get the software. It is usually half the price or less, and most software allows you to upgrade to the retail version.

Check with your festival and see if they allow submissions from Acedemic softeware.

Are you asking specifically about Vegas or software in general? As Rapier said, most academic versions limit the use of their software to academic use (and sometimes non-profit as well) in their End User License Agreement (EULA) if purchased from an academic reseller. In most cases, this does not limit the functionality of the software itself. At most, they may not include 3rd-party tools with the academic version that come bundled with the retail version.

However, Vegas is the exception to this rule. There is no difference in the EULA between the academic version and the retail version. Only the price is different. If you are eligible to purchase from an academic reseller, then that is the best place to purchase Vegas.

Thanks for the answers, I just thought to myself, what is the difference, I mean I know I can get the student discount, but then I wont be able to do much with it, but save abundle, or get the other version and do anything with it..I thought there would be a catch, and there it was =).

I purchased the academic version since I am a student. As far as I know, there is no difference between that and the full version of the software.

I've never seen software where there was. Adobe Viddeo Suite, Macromedia 2004, Lightwave, none had restrictions on software capability.
