Since my son is a College Student, Where can we purchase this version from? Also is it the full Vegas+DVD and is the upgrade free when the new version come out?
Thanks..JRT
I got mine from http://www.journeyed.com. They do have the full Vegas+Dvd as well as the stand alone vegas. As fare as the upgrade goes, I imagine you are talking about if you buy vegas now they will upgrade you to 5 for free. I am guessing that that offer still stands, however don't quote me on that.
As for the free upgrade to v5, the specifics have not been fully explained. Sony's website does say you can get a free upgrade for Vegas, but it does not specifically say the same for Vegas+DVD. Also, nothing has been implicitly said for those who buy the academically-priced version.
Of course, most of the answers can be assumed to be yes (you can get an upgrade for +DVD, even if you bought it at an academic price). There has just been a lot of debate about this because the press release was not specific.
You might want to ask Sony your question before making your purchase.
Yes, but the thing here is that while it is a separate program, it cannot be bought separately, so one would hope that the free upgrade for buying Vegas+DVD wouldn't amount to just Vegas v5. Of course, logic would say that you would get the upgrade for +DVD as well, but you can't always trust a company to act logically
BTW, the free upgrade is only for those who bought the software after March 1st :-[
I purchased mine from Student Software Store for $258 including DVD Architect, Screenblast Acid 4.0, Vision Series 1 and shipping costs. The big question is whether Sony will provide a free upgrade to 5.0. I am alright as far as the time of purchased requirement set by Sony. Let us hope Sony does the right thing for their customers.
To those who have Premiere loaded in their system, will it be a problem having both NLE softwares in your PC. I have projects completed in Premier and still need them. Anyone experiences conflicts or crashes using either programs while both are in the same system. I would appreciate any feedbacks before creating a monster of a headache trying to restore the system.
I have Premiere 6.0 installed side-by-side with Vegas 4.0, with no conflicts. I will sometimes have Premiere running in the background, and tab over to it to generate a SmartSound song to fit with the video in Vegas, or use Premiere's titler plug-ins (like Inscriber or TitleDeko). 97% of what I do is in Vegas, but there are some things Premiere does (like generating a sequence of still images, or using the SmartSound plug-in) that Vegas doesn't, so I run 'em simultaneously. No problems yet.
Thanks for all the answers.. One other..Once I get Vegas, what other items would you reccomend? My computer is fine and firewire card, but if you want to have an ext Monitor, what should be the best way to hook this up? Through a loop out of your Camera/Deck or is there a way to monitor right out of the computer?
JRT
The best method of viewing your work via an external monitor would be by way of the firewire port. You might want to look into Digital/Analog converters, such as Canopus' ADVC100 (link). Basically, you need something that can take a firewire input (digital) and output it to an analog signal (S-Video, Composite, etc.) to connect to your broadcast monitor (just like a TV). In that respect, even your camera would work (tho not recommended).
Also, make sure you have an separate hard drive for capturing your video. You do not want to capture or work with video on the same hard drive that your operating system and programs are installed on.
One thing to remember about the video out (to a monitor) -- it lags behind the timeline and there is no sound -- so the sound in your speakers will be well off-sync with your TV picture. FYI.
My old computer used to play out to an external monitor off-sync, but on my new computer, the audio from my computer's speakers is perfectly in-sync with what is being shown on the external monitor. It was a big surprise the first time I used Vegas on my new system!
In any case, you can get your audio in sync with your external preview by adjusting the sync offset under the "Video Device" tab in Vegas' preferences. So I was even able to get a synced up preview from my old computer
