About to make a purchase decision.. leaning toward HVX 200, could use some advice.

I had trouble deciding between the HVX and its competition, but after getting the HVX I am continually amazed at the life-like images and the incredible color that it records. I also love not working with video tape.

Having extensively tested them all (except the new Sony V1U) I would definitely agree with you on this point.

Barry have you got your hands on a Sony V1U? I am interested in using one on a documentary, and shooting several hours of footage a day I think it will be more practical to use than the hvx 200.

Have not seen a V1U yet. I am very interested in that camera; the CMOS chips alone would be enough to put it high on my list to check out, but the notion that Sony finally (FINALLY!) is addressing prosumer-priced 24P makes it a breakthrough as well.

From what I've read about it, I think the Canon is probably the much better tool for most uses that DVXUsers would be interested in, but that's a first impression from reading, not from using.

For the original poster,

Buying two cameras seems to be overkill. Buy one and rent the second as needed, if you won't be shooting all the time with it.

I see a little more resolution from the A1, but certainloy not "much" more...I must admit. I am surprised.

The greatest difference is in the color.

...not the color saturation (that can be adjusted extensively), but rather in the color repartition.

The HVX has so much rich colors embeded "in" the shadows.

I saw some A1 daylight clips from Kaku that showed noise in the shadows even if the overall color saturation was maybe 50% less than the HVX.

Maybe with time, people will find the way to improve the A1 colors in shadows.
