About stepless exposure control

Hi,

Could someone tell how smoothly aperture change is supposed to work on Panasonic's 14-140 mm HD and 14-42 mm lenses during movie recording? Do they behave similarly in both GH1 and GH2?

I have just had an opportunity to play around with a 14-140 mm HD lens on GH1. I have no previous experience with G-series Panasonics or with video shooting. (I have to send this used GH1 unit soon back to the store, because continuous-AF or Pre AF don't seem to work during still shooting. For some reason, everything seems to be okay during movie recording...)

Example 1:
I chose "Creative motion picture mode" from the main dial and "Shutter priority" from the "Motion picture" menu. I choose shutter speed of 1/50 s. (I live in PAL-land.) During movie recording I panned/aimed the camera from dark scene to bright scene and vice versa. In a very silent environment I could hear small ticks as aperture changed and this caused also small momentary steps of illumination change in final video. ISO was set at 1600. (Made this same experiment with autofocus and manual focus, which proved the sound was aperture change.)

I read somewhere that consumer camcorders usually control changing illumination first by changing aperture and then by changing gain (= ISO sensitivity?). They usually try to keep shutter speed at constant value. (Usually at 1/50 s in PAL area).

Does anybody know in which order GH1/GH2 cameras change shutter speed, aperture and ISO when shooting in iA or "semi automatic" modes. Or do they change all unlocked variables at the same time to make lighting in final recording as smooth as possible?

If you use other lens than 14-140 HD lens (which has stepless automatic aperture control) and don't lock aperture at fixed value, does this mean that you easily see quite big illumination steps in final video? Ie. does GH1/GH2 change aperture of for example Panasonic 14-42 in "big" steps if you don't lock it?

Thanks for your time

By the way, I did the same test as mentioned in my first post with Auto-ISO. Camera didn't seem to adjust aperture but preferred adjusting ISO instead. At least I didn't notice even those minor steps that I mentioned when using fixed ISO.

So if you have found links to good sample movies showing Panasonic's 14-45 mm or 14-42 mm kit lenses used with G-series cameras, please share. I mean examples showing how big are these aperture change steps if letting camera to control aperture automatically in environment of changing illumination.

Would like to see the difference between HD lens and non-HD lens with latest firmware updates... :)

Trying to figure out if 14-140 mm or 14-42 mm kit lens is the right lens for me. 14-140 does have some extra reach and at least almost stepless aperture and silent focusing. But 14-42 is a bit brighter (bigger max aperture). Some users have reported it to be very silent during AF too.

I'm in believe that you can't force GH1 (body firmware 1.32, lens firmware 1.4) to lock aperture and shutter speed, but leave ISO to be automatically (steplessly?) changed during video recording. I wonder if this can be done easily with the new GH2?
