Abandoned Video Store

Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
A sweet video store that used to be up, is now down and not running. IT has been liek this for about 3-4 years now. Its still there, and me and my friends wanted to check it out. We went in through the back, and there was spray painting everywhere, water dripping, wood and crap all over the place. It was a total wreck. I want to now make a short movie in side of it. What is the worst that could happen? Should I get permission? Or can i just go in, and hope not to get caught. Would i get in a lot of trouble?

Thanks

Oh sad... But yes get permission, not only is it just the right thing to do it's also easer to make a movie without constantly looking behind you're shoulder. Plus if you get caught you could get in tons of trouble especially sense you can't prove you did not do the spray painting.

If caught you could be charged, and even arrested, with criminal trespassing. Plus possibly other offenses like vandalism, too.

Plus I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have clean copyright to your piece either, as it was shot illegally, and therefor you couldn't ever distribute it anywhere properly.

Get permission.

Go to the building department. Or the tax assessor..They can do a title search via the address and find the owner or lienholder. Contact them for permission

Along with what everybody else said, did you check there was still power to the building?

Sounds like a nice location.

I wouldn't trespass if I were you...too many legal implications. Where is this place?

If it is part of some run down strip mall, check with other store owners to see who to talk to. Otherwise, you may have to go the routes others have mentioned.

As for the head of the town, if you're in Toronto, I doubt Mayor Miller would take the time to check for you...I've interviewed the dude, and he's all business.

So is the store a stand alone type building? Are there any signs for contacting a rental agent or anything anywhere?

You'd think someone wants to rent that place out again and make some cash...unless it has been abandoned due to unpaid taxes, or something like that.
