A7sii + Odyssey 7Q combo?

So I recently shot an event with my fs700 in combo with the Odyssey 7q for the first time. I hated dialing stuff into the Odyssey and how it worked. But when I saw the footage I was blown away.
I have an a7sii and now I'm wondering what the Odyssey 7q is capable of with that camera.
Has anyone tried it out?

I'm curious does it record a 10bit or 8bit signal? Can I do 120fps in 4k? I know how the camera is stuck in full frame mode in 4k at 24+30fps and it's super cropped in at 120fps. How are these things affected with the Odyssey?

It can convert the UHD of the A7S to a semi-10bit HD... but in UHD it's 8bit as that's what the A7SII is outputting... Also don't think the A7SII can output 120p... So I guess you're stuck with 60p HD and 30p UHD...

I agree, the user interface of the Odyssey 7Q is just horrible... usually once you're dialled in, you don't have to deal with it so much though. With the FS700 it uses the raw signal, which is 10bit all the way so there you really got a big difference from the internal...

The HDMI input of the 7Q also seems quite glitchy. I had a lot of issues with the connection the only time I used it with my A7S (using the supplied HDMI cable). Wish the 7Q had a proper full size HDMI port... Wouldn't dare to use it for anything critical, non repeatable, after the experience I had with it.

If it's just for the A7S and you have no need to use other cameras with it, a recorder like the Video Devices PIX-E5H might be a better option... But since you have the FS700 as well...

Thanks for the reply.
What would be the benefit of the Video Devices PIX-E5H with the a7s as opposed to the Odyssey 7q?

Cheaper & Smaller! It's got a 5" monitor... and potentially a more robust HDMI input connector (but I have never used it so don't know about that). It doesn't have the UHD to 10bit (ish) HD that the Odyssey7Q has though...

If you also are going to use it with the FS700, then the Odyssey (or Shogun Inferno) is the way to go though.

The A7SII only outputs broadcast video resolution/frame rate standards. In UHD it outputs 23.98p, 25p & 29.97p. In HD it outputs those frame rates as well as 50p & 59.94p. All output from the A7SII is 8-bit 4:2:2.

The Odyssey7Q+ can record all of these as Apple ProRes in HQ, 422, LT or Proxy. It can also take the UHD signal and supersample it to HD, creating a higher resolving HD image than the camera does internally, as well as utilizing all of the IHD's color information to create a pseudo-10-bit 4:2:2 signal. This means that the HD derived by the Odyssey7Q+ in this form outperforms the HD output by the camera directly.

My preferred HDMI cable is the HyperThin line by Sanho. There is a model that goes directly from the camera's Micro HDMI connector to the Odyssey's Mini HDMI connector, and the cable is thin, flexible and robust. If you wish to insure the connection to the Odyssey socket, I also recommend one of the 3rd party HDMI cable clamps available from the Odyssey7Q+, such as the Xtender model.
