A7sII Dual Record with Atomos V

Hey,

Anyone know if you can set the A7sII up to record a lower res file internally while outputting a 4K signal to an external recorder? I want to get the Atomos V to bypass the recording limit in 4K, and to also not have to worry about overheating in 4K. However, I'd feel much safer if I was also recording internally during those times, as sort of a dual card slot function. But, if I do that in 4K, then I risk overheating the camera again... If I use the Dual Record mode on the camera, can I record 4K out and 1080p internally?

Thanks,
Dan

Not possible, but you can output the signal from the V to another (cheaper) recorder if you really require dual recording.

You can also try a dummy battery/brick/d-tap combo to extend internal recording a bit if overheating is a concern. [It really helped with my a6300 a few years ago, but I wasn't recording internally; just to a recorder in which I wouldn't see the warning symbol until an hour or so.]

I don't require dual recording, but one of the main draws of a recorder was to essentially gain two recordings...I can definitely do this for 1080p, but it sounds like maybe not for 4k without the risk of overheating. So, lets just say I got the Ninja Star, which can only record up to 1080p 30fps... I could run the Atomos V to the Ninja Star and get 4K from the Atomos and 1080p from the Star?

I use a dummy battery, didn't get any overheating this year internally, then again I didn't really shoot in super hot conditions for once.

Why did you get overheating after an hour if you were recording eternally? The camera shouldn't ever overheat if you're not asking it to do anything?

The a6300 is much worse with overheating than the a7SII...I actually never experienced overheating with the a7SII.

Initially, with the a6300, the camera shut off after 20 minutes or so until a firmware update to disable that was released. And even with external recording (and no internal) and a dummy battery, it was eventually too much for it and I would get the warning symbol and it would shut off (before the firmware).

As far as the output from the Ninja V to the Star, you should be able do that but I would test it all to confirm as I haven't used that combo.
