I just came across an amazing youtube video where someone did a side by side comparison of the Sony A7sII and the Canon C300 Mark II shooting skin tones. What amazed me was how natural looking the skin tones were coming out of the A7sII given the fact that no LUTs were applied in post, just a little tweaking in Premiere's Lumetri Color window in under 2 minutes. A7sII settings were Slog2, S-Gamut Cine, Saturation dialed up to +16.
The Sony A7sII didn't exhibit the same detailed skin texture as the Canon C300 Mark II and seemed slightly less sharp. The tester explains that this is due to the fact that the A7s2 is recording to a very compressed codec - Sony XAVCS 8bit 4:2:0 100 Mbps vs Canon's XF-AVC 10-bit 410 Mbps. The A7sII also took look longer to get back into focus as the subject moved around a lot in the frame.
Can someone reading this do a similar test, but this time recording skin tones on the A7sII to an external recorder like the Shogun or Ninja Assassin using Pro Res 422 HQ (707 Mbps), 422 (471 Mbps), or even 422 LT (328 Mbps). Very curious to see how much more natural looking and detailed skin texture would be using an external recorder vs the internal XAVCS codec.
I just upgraded to the A7sII, but I don't have access to a Canon C300 MKII or an external recorder. But if I did, I'd want to do this test right away.
