A7S vs GH4

Hey,

I own a GH4 and a A7S and I am leaving for a travel trip(Central America). And I am not sure which camera to take. I always shoot slog2 and v-log. So the A7S seems to be around a stop more in slog2 then v-log. So that is a plus, however it is native iso 3200, So I always have a 10 stop vari ND on there. It can get shallow depth of Field more easily with a zoom on the A7S then a GH4. (Battery issue is solved, I got a battery grip). Then again the GH4 is v-log native iso 400 and it is 4K and the body/menu makes more sense.

What camera do you guys prefer for a travelvideo?

Kind regards,

If it's work, take the best camera that suits your clients needs.

If its a vacation, forget all the dynamic range crap and take the camera that won't get in the way. Relax and enjoy.

I think it would probably depend on the native lenses that I own for each system, plus my adapted lenses. And whether I had a Metabones Speedbooster adapter for either system for my modern lenses.

Or you may have a Canon FD lens kit, Nikon AI, or similar? Those are easier to adapt to either system for a smaller cost. So a $650 Metabones Speedbooster wouldn't sway my decision quite as much. ;)

For example, when I had my Sony A7II and A6000, I had very few native lenses, because the FE lenses were so expensive. I didn't invest in the Sony FE 24-70 4.0 and 70-200 4.0, as I do in almost every other system I own.

I do own the Panasonic 12-35 2.8 and 35-100 2.8. Those were the first 2 lenses that I bought in M 4/3. They may not be perfect, but they can cover most things I would come across. Along with a few select, native primes, like a 15 1.7, 25 1.7, and a 42.5 1.7. So I would probably take the GH4 based on that, or buy the Sony equivalents.

Note that I do both stills and video, so I like high quality, auto focus, modern zoom lenses.

For the past 15+ years I have always have the 24-70 2.8 & 70-200 2.8 zooms as core tools in my len kit, either the Canon or Nikon versions. Or the 4.0 equivalents, like the Canon 17-40 4.0, 24-105 4.0, and 70-200 4.0 IS.

Obviously different people work in different ways. And have different budgets for lens acquisition.

Good luck!
