a7s vs a7: apart from 4k, does it really worth it ?

Hey all,

I am torn apart between the two.
Don't plan any 4k, just curious how much better a7s in 1080p is
when compared to a7 and does it worth twice the price (which is the case in Europe)?

a7s has SLog2 and no line skipping.
No aliasing and moire.
Better codec and sturdier mount (stainless steel)
as compared to both a7 and a7r.
Of course super high iso.

Any other critical feature (apart from 4K) which would
warrant choosing a7s as compared to a7?

What do you guys think?

Regards,
Denis.

I think you answered your own question

If you are using it mainly for video, yes it is worth it (my 2 cents :) )

Agree with @strancall.
If you use it mainly for video, it is worth. If you want use it for photo too and does not need continuous high fps burst, it is a good low light photo camera too.

For video, it's just nowhere close. Clean image (no aliasing/moire), better codec, slog2. Worlds apart.

I won't record 4K for a year at least, and I preordered the a7s the day the price went public.

I think this video answers a lot of questions. Amazing. Looking forward to shooting my A7s with the Gh4

Edit: I forgot to mention I have an A7 and its an awesome stills camera - if you can live with the AF limitations compared to a DSLR - but the video is worse IMO than what I was getting out of my Nex 5n. Sony's method of pixel binning its FF sensors creates a mess of moire and aliasing, and its really soft. The shallow DOF stuff looks pretty good because it doesn't stress the codec, but deep focus shots with any detail turn to mush. I'm shooting some GH4 tests to find a profile I like, I'll throw in a few A7 shots just to compare before the 7s ships.

More A7 vs 7s thoughts - the fishing village video has a few wide shots that show far more detail than any A7 video, and that's viewing them on YouTube after compression. There's a lot of fine detail that would be riddled with moire on the A7, but its totally clean and very detailed. I shoot a test scene at a marina full of sail boats to test detail and aliasing, and moire with the water. That scene was a mess with the A99 and the A7. 5d3 raw did the best job of any camera I've used so far. I haven't shot it with the GH4 yet, but I'll put it and the A7s to the test soon. The A7s 1080p looks significantly better than any FF video I've seen outside of 5d3 raw, but the low light video just posted completely kills everything in low light.

Given their previous track record, I believe it will be exactly what Sony proclaimed.. A solid upgrade for users already shooting video with ANY of today's DSLR's(including the gh4).

+1..

This low light video contains a STAGGERING amount of dynamic range in the blacks. The 15.3 figure is most likely for stills, but have a look @ the 1 minute mark(check out the high light detail inside the lantern AND in the blacks). Even if it's 13, that is a massive leap for such a small camera.
