A7S Staccato Motion Blur

Anybody else seeing this staccato style motion blur pop up on their A7S?

It almost looks like a Red camera shooting in HDRx mode with 2 shutter speeds in one.

I've seen it in video many times, even at 1/40 (and I think it's what contributes to the whole "Sony look" thing that Red/BM users go on about), but this was my first time seeing it in stills mode. Is there a way to avoid this & get creamier motion blur?

I've occasionally seen this in stills I've made with various cameras. It is possible to get a similar blur pattern with most cameras, I believe. You just hold steady in the beginning and in the end portion of the (still) shot, but not in the middle. Of course, one can hardly do it on purpose. Shutters can also do this with certain shutter speeds if they introduce virbrations at a specific position in the movement of the shutter. What speed was this shot at?

Interesting. What was the shooting situation. Locked off camera and subject moving, moving camera? If it's just the subject moving any chance that he (assuming he) was still, moved and then was still during the exposure?

I've not really seen anything like this so far.

IMHO most motion issues i believe are more compression based than camera in that the compressor create IBP frames and sometimes depending on subject the difference frames tend to jump a bit.

what was your shutter speed? also you using the silent shutter?

Handheld, not sure what the shutter was there, but I've seen it as low as 1/40 (although it's a smoother look), and as high as 1/400.

I believe silent shutter was on there. Would silent shutter affect video & stills mode, or just stills?

it would affect stills, which is what i thought you were talking about, but i see now you're talking about both stills and video. in video mode that just looks like your shutter speed and frame rate might cause that, but for stills mode i'm wondering if the silent shutter, (just the sensor i guess) is causing that with how it reads out.

I don't see how the silent shutter would do that, it's a vertical scan - it will show pulsing of lights sometimes and rolling shutter but i've never encountered that kind of double image. 1/400 you wouldn't really get much motion blur anyway.

Either it's the way the subject is moving, so it just happens to be still at the beginning of the exposure, move, then is still again at the end or perhaps there's a compression or encoding problem where part of the frame isn't being compressed correctly.

If i was a betting man i reckon subject movement, especially is jurny has seen it on an F3

Well, video is in "silent shutter" mode always as it uses the same purely electronic shutter.

Fair point :)

It may scan at a different rate though, there's a blog somewhere from a swedish guy in incredible detail about these kind of things and noise performance. I can't remember the name or URL at the moment, search dark noise on A7s...

cheers
