A7S + SmallHD Focus power issue

Hi all

Hoping someone may be able to shed some light on this issue.

I've just purchased a SmallHD to FW50 dummy battery power adapter (which allows Sony mirrorless cameras to be powered via the SmallHD monitor).

However the A7S is going flat in around 30 minutes, even when I'm using a fully charged 8000mah NPF battery. It should last hours! Weirdly, the A7S goes flat but the monitor still runs.

Just wondering if anyone is using this setup that might have any thoughts?

Good thought, but no I don't think so - I've never had overheating issues with the a7s..

The battery indicator on the camera is definitely quickly depleting then shows the orange "battery empty" icon. Then the camera turns off, and the monitor shows plenty of charge left.
 
I've been quickly browsing any available reviews with keywords and also searched YouTube, but I'm not receiving any relevant hits (at least so far).

And I've used a dummy D-Tap via a brick with the a6300 hundreds of times (which would power the camera for many hours), so there's no doubt an adapter works.

Maybe it's an electrical problem either with your camera, the monitor, and/or the wire? Original a7S, right? Not the second version? (Asking because the older the hardware the more prone it is to random issues.)
 
Interesting. I'd done quite a bit of Googling but hadn't thought to check the other version.

Yeah, original A7S. Maybe it's just not a good option for now. I am planning on upgrading to the A7s III when it's released so might just have to put up with using the tiny batteries for now.
