A7S small self recording hotshoe mic

Hello,

I'm loving my A7S except 2 major quirks for me:
1. Battery life (but there are some solutions)
2. Movie mode... I like better to shoot video in stills mode for most of the reasons written here, especially for focusing
http://www.eoshd.com/2014/09/youre-better-shooting-video-stills-mode-sony-a7s/

The thing is that while shooting in any still mode, is very limitative for the audio ! you don't have any audio rec parameters, you have to switch back to movie mode to adjust levels. Then, in stills mode, vumeters only activate when you hit record, and moreover, and this is the baddest part: when shooting video in stills mode you don't have any audio return on the heaphones, making you recording sound as deaf. This is an issue, as I like better to trust my ears than meters.

So I'm looking for a mic that is also a recorder, but a small one that could fit on a hotshoe. I know about the Zoom H4N for example but this is too big and I don't need all this XLR inputs, my dream would be like a Rode videomic or stereomic like, but with a SD card that records in it and it's dedicated headphones output.

Anyone knows a product like this?

Thanx a lot

Baz

I am unaware of any 'shotgun & recorder' in one solution that you are looking for. I'm sure you could rig some videomic and a small recorder like a Zoom H1 to the hotshoe but it wouldn't be elegant. You could also just mount a Zoom H1 to the hotshoe, but it probably wouldn't sound much better than the internal mics but at least you'd have access to levels and the headphones. Of course, no mic is going to sound good mounted on the hotshoe.

Something like the Tascam DR-60d is usually a go to DSLR audio recorder. It would mount under the A7s and you would have access to XLR as well as 3.5mm inputs and the levels would be easy to see. You could then mount your videomic of choice on the hotshoe or (preferably) on the end of a boom pole or you could run wireless into it as well.

Might depends on the type of mic you want but the sony ecm-xyst1m and tascam TM-2X might be worth a look.
