A7s settings question (mode 1 and 2)

I'm usually shooting everything in slog2 but I want to try some other profiles like autumn leaves. I want to easily switch between the two, so I tried to save my slog profile to 1 (it goes just after the M mode) and autumn leaves to 2. The problem is that when I save any profile to 1 or 2, I can't lock the shutter speed to 1/50... it changes based on the lighting conditions. Is that possible to lock? Or these modes are pretty useless?

I'm not sure how, but yes, you can lock it (basically, configure it as an M mode). The trouble with 1 and 2 is that you lose all your settings when you format the card, that's why I stopped using them.

How do I exactly configure it as an M mode? The only way I know is to change the dial to M (which I use 90% of the time). I also just checked the function list and couldn't find where to change it.

Regarding the formatting, I never format my card, I just cut and paste my video or picture files. I also remove thumbnails directly from the card, so non-existent files are not previewed in my camera.

About the first thing: I did it, but don't remember how, sorry :(

About the second thing: that's not good practice. That kind of use makes data errors more likely. Formatting the card from time to time is a good idea (though using that as the only "erase" option, as I do, may be overkill).

Not sure if this helps to answer your question but I'll give it a shot:

For shooting video you can change the [Shoot Mode]. This is NOT the same as changing the top dial as [Shoot Mode] directly addresses video only!

[Shoot Mode] = [Program] or [Aperture Priority] or [Shutter Priority] or [Manual]

[Shoot Mode] can be found by configuring it to show up in the [Function Set Menu]. You can set this to the [Function Set Menu] under the "Gear Icon"->Tab#6.
Once set exit the menu and press the [Fn Button] and you will see an icon that shows "P" or "A" or "S" or "M" depending on what you have set it to.

So in this case try changing the [Shoot Mode] to [Shutter Priority] to gain manual control of the shutter and thus allowing you to "lock" it to 1/50 (assuming you want your Aperture to be in full automatic). You can also combine this mode with the [AEL Toggle] function to lock the exposure whenever you want to. You need to assign the [AEL Toggle] function to a custom key in order to use it.

Thanks for looking into this.

When I change dial to 1 or 2 and pick "Shoot mode" (via function menu), it is named MR (memory recall), when I click on it, I could only pick my saved profiles. All of my profiles are in P mode which I'm not sure how to change to M.

When I dial to "video mode" (not sure how it's called but, it goes after 2) and go to shoot mode, I can change to P, A, S or M but it's not the case in 1 or 2 modes which I'd like to utilize.

PS "Shoot mode" is by default attached to lower 6 function.

That comment helped me remember... IIRC, you have to go to M, set all your settings as you like them, then store the profile as M1. Then set a different set of settings (!!) and store them as M2. Then move the dial to M1 or M2.

What is the difference between memory 1, 2, M1, M2 and M3?

Does "M" stand for "Manual" in that case?

mmm... I think there were four slots, two of them are available from the dial, the other two had to be selected through menus
but really, I haven't used this feature in the last year: I just tested it when I got my camera, and stopped using it once I realized formatting the card destroyed all those settings
