A7s Rig setup

Hi there,

How are you rigging up your A7s? I would like to add the XLR-K1M too. Do you think it would be better to go with the old xlr adapter or the new one? The cable could be better for rigging? I'm also thinking about using something like the Zacuto Enforcer but I'm thinking it might be worth having a counterweight. How are you shooting it up with the A7s?
 
Zacuto makes great stuff. If you are going to use a cage though you probably need something more substantial than the enforcer. If you are going for a super light rig you could get away with the Enforcer and the new XLR adaptor. Also take a look at these guys. http://www.hondogarage.com/index.php/product/landing/the-pop-and-lock-travel-rig I have the Pop and Lock and it's always in my bag. Super solid shoulder support or handle for the A7S if you want a really light and unobtrusive rig. I typically use mine in a should stock configuration with a rode mic. It doesn't really draw to much attention to itself.
 
That's a good point. I think I will have two handheld modes: unobtrusive and a big rig for production. I like this rig but it feels cartoonishly big with the a7s. I'd like to have a big enough rig so I could use an 85 prime without image stabilization.
 
I used the wooden camera cage (http://woodencamera.com/Quick-Cage-DSLR-Small.html) with the baseplate and a top handle. Since the cage mounts via the hot-shoe mount, you won't be able to mount the XLR-K1M. Although I've seen people NOT mount the cage via the shoe mount, so it is possible.

It's a great little setup. The photo shows a more 'studio/gun and gun' setup (working on buying a few more elements to the rig). But it can just as easily slide off the rig and you're left with the bare minimum cage and can shoot through the a7s viewfinder. Actually the additional weight from the cage helps to get rid of some of the rolling shutter.

The Motion9 cage cable clamp does look good. I don't think I would use it as a handle!

I placed an order at 16x9 for the Movcam unit. It looks like fufillment will be this coming week.
 
I got the movcam. Few complaints - I don't think you'll find something that's more "custom" to this camera; it's well thought out. My only real bug is the handle cannot be moved. It would be nice if you didn't have to disassemble the cage to get the camera in or out. Otherwise it's a work of art.

Agreed, it would be a no-brainer to get that one if I didn't have to totally dissemble it for street photography.

I am jealous! Are those SHAPE handles on the front? I'm thinking about getting this SHAPE rig. I think I really need something with a counterweight.
 
Would be nice if someone made a rig specifically for the A7s with the vertical grip. My current rig works well, but could be better. (walimex pro aptaris adjustable XL with the extensions)

i'm planning to get the movcam as well but the handle stop me for awhile. But i think can remove the movcam handle and install this one: http://woodencamera.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=726
 
I have the varavon cage, love it! The handle is easily and quickly taken off and the cage fits the cam very well. highly recommended, especially for the price they sell it on ebay. Cheers
 
take a look at the varavon cage! Fits the A7s way better than the honu cage, the handle can be taken off quickly and the camera is attached via one screw.
 
Looks like a great cage! I talked to VARAVON and they told me the XLR-K2M will fit with the cage. Im buying this one.
