A7s plus blackmagic 4k to sdi to odyssey 7q work?

With this guy - Blackmagic Design Mini Converter HDMI to SDI 4K - can you get 4k into the odyssey 7q. anyone try?

I think you should be able to get 4k up to 30p over hdmi 1 straight into 7q, never tried it. Only tried 60p

The two sdi outputs on those are 6g sdi in duplicate, not dual link capable. The 7q is 3G sdi not 6g sdi connectors I believe.

in theory it means you might be able transmit whatever the max framerate for 4k 3gsdi is (might be different in uncompressed etc), and in a 2nd theory you could grab their other box and convert the single 6gsdi into 2x3gsdi or 4xsdi for the 7q.

in practice a few weeks ago Mitch alluded to dual path development for their 4k hdmi solution, and that one unnamed manufacturers box essentially did not work as expected. I'm thinking this might be the combo, but Mitch might have to chime in.

maybe they have something fancy up their sleeve with display port 1.4a and 1.2 type-c alternate mode ... Aside from the obvious hdmi 2.0 hw upgrade path.

i think if cd got anything to work so far with convertrr boxes, no matter how clunky, they would have mentioned it. Possible but clunky is a big deal and might hold people off buying shoguns.

any combo of devices work so far Mitch ?

I don't recommend going this way before getting a confirmation it will work. I've seen Mitch Gross mentioning they still haven't decided how the 4K recording out of the GH4 and A7s will work, but they do say they will have a path for this to happen. No one knows what it is, a converter? Ideally just through the HDMI? We'll see. Just wait.

This particular option was tested quite a while back and did not work. The failure was before the signal reached the Odyssey7Q. We are looking at other options.

Any progress on the A7s external recording gamma issue?
I answered this in the thread on the issue. All the bits are there, they are just mapped differently. Internal is 16-235 to fit within the consumer XAVC-S format. External is 0-255 because... absolutely no clue why they wouldn't match. But the fact is one can remap either one to the other and the information becomes identical. Trick is to make sure your recorder captures all 0-255 instead of truncating to 16-235. Truncating means lost info. We are making sure that the Odyssey7 and 7Q will never truncate.

As Mitch states the O7Q records HDMI from the A7s beautifully, I posted this video showing the gamma shift a while ago. No information is lost it just looks better shooting and is easy to grade.

PS. I now have a good external solution for batteries for the A7s. Using a "dummy" battery I can now use Sony L's or IDX/AB brick batteries to power the A7s this makes it much more usable as a Video cam IMHO. I am working on a power kit that can be in your pocket or on a shoulder brace or attached to the camera itself in various locations with big lens support and optional 15mm rails.

I just ordered the first 100 dummy batteries for a "beta" run of these kits. I will post more here soon.
