Hey,

yet another Travel video.

Me and my girl we went to New Zealand for December enjoy Christmas in a van. She is a blogger so I had to shot some video for her. I used Brandon Li's advice to not overshoot and rather enjoy vacation so it was not like a gig and I really enjoyed it in the end. I also paid couple bucks for voice over from Fiverr since it looks like it is quite popular to have little bit of motivation in the video and I did not like option to use any "random famous guy voice" from youtube.

Anyway I shot on good old a7s with first version of Zhiyun Crane, 3 basic cheap lenses - FE 28-70, FE 50 1.8 and my favorite Canon 10-18, used noPP, cine4 and couple of SLOG2 shots.

PS: I am proud that I did not use any of those fancy overused transition :)).

very nicely done.

you should be pleased. i would!

the sony a7s did not look "old".

colors were lovely, no visible noise.

i thought your skies were great-no banding though everyone yells about "only 8bit" and the resulting issues.

crane shots totally worked.

canon wide shots were appreciated.

bottomline for me:

you have a really good eye
new zealand is gorgeous
the sony a7s v1 is still a darn good tool.

be well.

I didn't care about the cheesy quotes, that's the only negative thing I could say about it. Great camera work, nice edit, beautiful colors. Well done.

I got my A7S some months before the A7SII and other than the internal 4K I don’t think I’ve missed anything. I’m glad you’ve had a similar experience, the A7S still is a great camera and I love the uncompressed output with my Atomos Shogun, it’s so cinematic! Funny enough, nearly everybody has come from using 8-bit DSLR video up to this point from the Canon 5D Mark II on (Nikon D90 for early adopters like me, haha) and haven’t had a problem using 8-bit for high end work, CGI blockbuster level projects, and industry award winning works. So, in summary, enjoy! :)

Really appreciate your comments, thank you!

Same here Zack, I bought it just before a7sII was announced. Waiting for a7sIII :)

I love the A7S. Can't say enough good things about it.

I was curious how you did that effect in the beginning where she reaches her hand out to you and pulls you into the frame. I notice the lighting on the left hand is different from the lighting on the right hand holding the tablet.

It is a great video you did. But my only suggestion is to balance it out more with some stationary shots. Of course, there is a lot to be said for constant movement, but I think some stationary shots mixed in more with moving shots actually accentuates the moving shots. For me, the constant movement gets tiring and I like the calmness of well composed stationary shots. For instance, in the final shot, you have a pic of her just standing there, and I think that works perfectly. I'd just like to see more stillness balanced in with all the motion.

Just my opinion.

Yeah Canon 10-18 is very good! I like it very much, tiny and shaaaaaarp!!!

Only bummer on Sony there isn't geometric correction like on Canon but it's still quite good, especially for the price!!

BTW guys I'm about to sell a gorgeous cage for the A7S from LockCircle, one of the best! and with its dedicated stainless steel PL mount made by P+S Technik! ! ! !

Let me know if interested!

Hey, thanks for the comments!

The effect is quite simple, two shots merged together and little bit of masking. Search for tutorial "after effects how to pull someone into another world", there is basically same thing.

About stationary shots. I am currently in a stage of love with moving shots. Thats why there are no many static shots :))

Sick video!!

I agree that the VO was totally unnecessary. In fact I daresay I hated it. I think it struck me as fake and corporate; very thick, disingenuous sincerity that totally jarred with your amazing visuals. A different voice or delivery, possibly some copy tweaks after that, could have flipped me back the other way. Please don't take this the wrong way because I'll totally save this and watch it again later to inspire my own gimbal work. Looks like you had a great vacation!

It is going to be useful for years, so long as it can be used right. Do not buy into a mkII unless you need the features. I'd trade mine for an Arri 435 just to burn this film, It does not stabilize footage. Think about it. Keep it and use it right. good work man
