A7S III - coming soon?

My guess - and you can take it to the bank that I will be proven wrong - is that A7IV and A7SIII is one and the same.

Although it might make sense reducing the number of models in the line, the “basic” A7 is trying to keep the price down.
If they would give that 10bit and stuff like that it would be a too cheap option for people to get instead of the FS5, for example. Sony has said that they estimate that the A7 range is cannibalising around 30% of the FS series sales.

I feel that Sony at the moment is trying too hard to protect their different tiers...

Might believe you, except the R4 is less sensitive than the vanilla 3

I do kinda think it makes sense to drop the “S” or the vanilla, and simple have two versions... one with more megapickles and photo geegaws and the other with fewer megapickles and more video whoozamawhatzits. The simple fact that the R4 already has unlimited record times, video eye AF, etc, points to their acceptance that most everyone winds up using either model for video at some point anyway. I’m not sure where the differentiation would really fall between an S and vanilla model.... but of course this is Sony, dedicated to market domination through infinite variation.

Technically speaking, a Quad Bayer sensor does both in one body. Sony has a 15/60 MPX IMX521CQR data collector. Some will say that its 60 is not really 60; others that it's the same one as in A7RIV but with a different color filter array and processing. Regardless of its imperfections, it was not made to sit on the shelf. Sony designs them, then stamps them out in millions and they find their way into something. And that something will probably be A7IV/S.

And what's wrong with Manila?

PS. As to sales cannibalization, the photo-video market is becoming far more congested. Everything from Pocket4K to Pocket6K to Sigma fp (very popular in Japan) to the EZ Cams to GH-6 to S1/S1H to Nikon Z6 w/Raw is vying for the same niche. At some point, it becomes a smorgasbord of overlapping options and Sony might as well go for it without crippling it too much.

One hopes.

PPS. Kevin, I am talking about A7IV (that I think will be the same as A7SIII), not A7RIV, which is what you have. Naturally, they could add more videocentric features like the 10-bit onto A7RIV - or RV in 2020 - but in that case, they'll likely defer to 1D XIII and D6. They shouldn't but they will.

Just looking around at the different choices today for hybrids (I guess everything is pretty much a hybrid today) and it strikes me odd that all of the makers do not have a 24bit XLR audio item like Panasonic? It is not that expensive or complex but it sure makes the camera more of a video tool. Sony has a older 16bit option. It might help to update that unit to entice the video crowd.

I think it is clear what we want - 10bit codecs and proper audio to start with. Does not seem too hard to figure this out but Sony and Canon do not want to play ball.
