A7s II HD and UHD comparred

UHD vs HD side by side labeled.jpg

To my eye I cant see much if any difference in detail and sharpness shooting in UHD versus HD S35. Thats a big deal if you want smaller files and finishing in HD anyways. Unlike the GH4 to get the best image you had to shoot in UHD. Need to shoot real world as well but the chart test is very promising.
APS-C mode was wet to auto so it kicked over when I changed the camera to HD.

It would be interesting to include a non-APS-C rendition of HD -- in other words, a full frame, downscaled HD sample.

Yeah I didn't know until after I wrapped up that the camera in HD defaults to APS-C mode. I'm going to assume Sony believes it's the better setting but that has to be seen.

Thanks for this test Erik, interesting results to say the least. I actually prefer the look of the HD image in your flickr comparison, things begin to look a little crunchy looking toward the center of the image in the 4K downsampled image in comparison. I'm sure in the real world, it won't matter :).Argh, it's getting VERY difficult not to throw my wallet at this thing immediately.

Erik, another interesting permutation can be to take the UHD signal and use your Odyssey7Q+ to SuperSample that to HD and record it in Apple ProRes. See how that compares to the native HD from the camera. You could also send the HD signal out to the Odyssey and record it so that you're looking at apple v apple.

I did similar less scientific tests in FF mode. I could not see few if any difference until I started scaling of course.
