A7s Full Frame vs APS-C

Hey fellas -

Besides the higher crop factor, is there any disadvantage to filming in APS-C mode? An archive search showed a post that mentioned that APS-C wasn't as sharp and without good contrast. Is that true?

I use them interchangeably without issue in HD. Actually APSC looks better for 60p with less artifacts.

In 4k there is a noticeable difference in noise, with FF looking much cleaner.

Interesting. Does the noise difference occur in 1080P as well?

well, in 4k apsc is not real 4k because it is not using enough pixels so it has to upscale. In HD apsc is no problem at all

Shooting 1080p, they are just as sharp.

FF 1080 60p does lineskipping, APS-C does not, so APS-C actually looks better.

APS-C gets noisy one stop before FF does. So, I use ISO 3200-12800 when shooting FF, but only 3200-6400 when shooting APS-C.

No idea about 4K, I don't have an external recorder.

Correct. This is what I was getting at, just practically it's to be avoided generally in 4k.

I don't find issues with noise in APSC HD, but I like to shoot below 1600. The a7s has a good looking noise pattern, but I still like to keep things clean. Even S-Log at 3200 is too gritty for me a lot of the time.

According to Erik Naso, the APS-C crop mode is actually slightly sharper and more detailed than the (1080p) FF mode.
