A7S Best monitor (not external recorder)

Hello,

I've been shooting with the A7S for some months, and I'm quite pleased with the image quality. It is then a quite tricky camera to use coming from 5D mark III
I especially don't like the LCD which is small, not that contrasty and not that trustable especially on custom flat profiles (on 5D mark II what you see is what you get).

I'm therefore looking for a nice affordable external monitor in order to get a clean trustable image, being able to focus and white balance nicely, would you have any advice on that ?

(I'm looking for just a monitor, not a recorder)

Thank you in advance !

Baz

small HD dp4 used!

I hated my DP4 EVF. Terrible menu system, average image quality and limited features for the price.

The new 502 should be a huge upgrade and perfect if you want an EVF although as previously mentioned, its expensive and the same price gets you a great screen AND 4k recorder with the PixE. Personally the 502 is way overpriced.

I'd go the Pix-E or if you're on a budget, the MustHD screens (5.6" or 7") have IPS panels and handy features with good image quality.

Hey Baz,

Selling my 5.6" Marshall monitor (with battery and hood) for $400.

Here's an officially link of the monitor.

Let me know if your interested.

Thanx a lot for your replies :)

The 502 looks great indeed but quite overpriced yeah.
Arrturito and ssvet I'll have a look on your monitors !

I know you specified not a recorder, but the blackmagic video assist looks like just the thing. It happens to also record prores but that can't hurt, right?

BTW have you tried using the A7S built-in EVF for video? It's very nice and sharp.

Also, any flat profile will make whitebalancing by eye pretty tough unless your monitor has LUTs, so just be careful of that or get a monitor with LUTs or don't use super flat SLOG2 or other custom flat profiles...

Are you saying you find the A7S LCD smaller and softer than the 5D LCD? I havent found that to be the case, but I suppose I don't shoot on 5D or other Canon DSLR very often these days.

Hi nyvz,

Thank the Blackmagic looks quite great indeed, and best price/value tag, the new Blackmagic line looks pretty neat.
I have to wait until it comes out but it seems like the thing as you say :)

Agreed for the flat profiles. I actually find the EVF pretty neat, but the LCD, when you are in complex situation (quite under/overexposed) doesn't really show what you will get as an output and is a bit smaller than Canon.
I shot some very underexposed shots yesterday (we wanted that look), but depending on situations some shots looked darker than the really were on LCD, but also the opposite !

I think an external monitor will be reliable for nailing exposure, and focus BTW. But yeah, during the day with a nice light that's not much of a problem ^^
