A7s best dynamic range pp after slog2?

PP6 outdoors and perhaps PP4 indoors (with saturation dialed down). This is based on my experience with color for skin tones, not DR per se. Use Slog2 with Pro or Cinema color mode (and other tweaks) if you need max DR (stock PP7 with SGamut hasn't shown any significant benefit in my tests so far (other than a 'vibrance' like look after converting to Rec709 in Resolve (using LUTs that are close (e.g. F65) but not quite right: Sony hasn't released tech specs for A7S Slog2+SGamut nor any LUTs for correctly processing it)). I've been working on matching the A7S to 5D3 RAW- getting closer: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/7804-anyone-with-a7s-and-canon-5d-mark-iii/

I think it is best if you talk in terms of Sony gammas rather than Picture Profile numbers. The standard Sony (ENG styled) gammas are Cine 1 through 4. Cine 1 is going to be your best best if you have good lighting. This will give you the best detail in both shadows and highlights. If it is a low light scenario then Cine 4. Cine 2 is a similar Gamma curve to Cine 1 but it chops off the highlights from 100 to 109. If you have to go direct to Broadcast this is the gamma to use.

Dennis Hingsberg who graces the Sony forums here has done yeoman service in sorting out the details of the various Sony gamma curves. He has also put together a guide that has all this info and more for about 10 bucks. Regardless, there is lots of info to digest off his website. You can read about it here...

And if you get your lighting right use can do extensive grading on your footage without it breaking apart.

Cine 4 exposed -2/3 is very close to Slog2 exposed +2, and the noise is preferable and you can shoot with low ISO. There's a thread about this.

You meant from 109 to 100 right?, so Cine 1 you have a little more flexibility in post than with the other gammas, i'm i correct?

Cheers

Hmm, I will look for said thread... are people using Slog2 LUTs with Cine4, and is Cine4 +1/3 similar to Slog2 +1?

I think most people would agree that LUTs are more related to the color mode than the gamma curve, and either way any LUT that's been created for Slog will ruin a clip shot in Cine4. The Slog color mode is weird, so mostly because of that a LUT is needed, and I'm guessing that everyone wh shoots with Slog color mode uses it in conjunction with Slog gamma. I find that using the cinema color mode is better for my taste, and I would never use any LUT using this mode, even when I do shoot with the Slog gamma.

And as I said, you'll get the most DR underexposing Cine 4 by -2/3. Here's the thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?327893-A7s-S-log2-too-noisy-Then-underexpose-cine4
