A7S Auto Focus and external recorders

Hey!

I have an A7S. I have it in MF and the AF/MF button mapped so it acts as 'Push Auto" and it works pretty great along with Face Detection. However, when the camera isn't in REC mode it focuses quick and ugly, while when in REC mode it does slow/smooth focus... Now I got myself a Ninja V to shoot 4K. Problem is, I cannot record on the A7S when outputting 4K, so the smooth focus is not working... anyone have any ideas?
(I believe that on newer A7 cameras Face Detection isn't working if you record externally and internally at the same time?)
 
I haven't used the original a7S in years, but face detection works on the a7III when recording internally and externally...it's only disabled when using 120fps.

I wouldn't be surprised if the older generation has some kind of limitation(s). Maybe try different modes (wide, spot, etc) to see if that helps/works?

I sold my Loxia 35mm and I want to buy a lens with zoom and autofocus.
And a ninja v also.

Even when recording to both simultaneously? I was under the impression that if you had hdmi output and recorded internally AF was somehow limited. Would be more than happy to be wrong though!
 
I just double-checked and also completely misread you yesterday as I meant one or the other...not simultaneously.

The AF in general works well in all modes while recording simultaneously, but unfortunately face-tracking is grayed out.

Once you unplug the HDMI or choose to use the 422 mode (no internal recording in this case) then it pops back up as an option to toggle on or off.

However, face-tracking is available in HD when recording simultaneously...(24p, 30p and 60p).

I need to do some more tests too, to see if I can adjust the speed of AF wenn not in REC mode...
