A7S: Adapters!

Thought it would be nice with some reporting on adapters for the a7s since there aren't too many native lenses out there.

This one is from RJ's camera, it's full frame compatible. Aperture works fine. I couldn't test IS since my lens doesn't have it (Canon 24-70 f2,8 USM L). Autofocus is not useable. It hunts like crazy and never locks on despite different modes.

Unfortunately there is some play. Both the adapter and lens can twist about half a millimeter, a total of 1mm. I had far worse, but it's annoying as hell. $269 + shipping.

So what do you use and how well does it work?

I have a Metabones Speedbooster and Commlite electronic adapter. I'd make sure that any adapter has an adjustable flange, as none of mine have arrived with proper collimation (measured against my CP.2s, which have perfect measurements on my C100). Tested IS on both adapters with Canon 24-105 and Tamron 24-70 VC, neither engaged. Autofocus is slow and not accurate on both.

Metabones Speedbooster allows flange adjustment, fit to camera and lens are snug.

Commlite does not have adjustable flange (and focuses far past infinity on all my lenses, but at least it's not short of infinity). Fit to camera is snug, but a bit loose on the lens side.

Commlite with the same findings as dcarstens and stevedocmaker......
Canon 70-200mm 2.8 mk2, Canon 17-55 2.8 (apsc), Canon 50mm 1.4 all as above
quirks -
Canon 18-135mm STM will work auto focus but not manually - presume because it is focus by wire
Sigma 105mm 2.8 macro - will only go down to 3.2 on aperture - EDIT - can get 2.8 after all, just need to take off and put on again

I feel like metabones has really stumbled. It's one thing to produce a $400 adapter if it works better than everybody else's, but from all reports, the metabones actually works *worse* (communication issues, lockups, complete non-function with many lenses) than the cheaper adapters. If it had perfect (like native) autofocus and was reliable, I'd gladly shell out the extra, but right now metabones looks like a poor way to go.

If somebody could produce an adapter than actually works just like native, they'd sell a boatload and lock up the market.

Will an A7s to Nikon speedbooster every be available? It seems that it exists for other mounts, but not Nikon. If not, what are the options for vintage and APS-C Nikon lenses?

So a SpeedBooster would only be usable on the A7s in APS-C crop mode, which might make the market pretty small for any manufacturer to take the risk in making one of these. I'm sure it will happen at some point, but I don't expect it will be cheap. ( most likely it will be a premium specialty item, priced much higher than other SpeedBooster adapters )

My lenses:
EF 25-105/f4
EF 24/f1.4
EF 70-300/f4
EFS 17-55/f2.8
EFS 18-135/f-whatever it is

All are tight. And APS-C auto crop mode works too.
