A7S + 7Q+ no signal...

So, was planning to maybe use the 7Q+ with my A7S for the first time today. But while trying it out last night I couldn't get a signal to the 7Q... First there was one but after setting up for 4K I couldn't get one. 7Q kept saying "no signal". Followed all the set up guides I could find, and tried various different settings... Nothing worked. This. Was with the HDMI cable that came with my 7Q+ and latest firmware on both.

Any gotcha I might have missed?

  1. Plug in the HDMI cable from the camera to the 7Q+ monitor before setting up theoutput. Otherwise, the menu setting for the following procedure will be disabled (gray).
To set up HDMI recording output:
    1. Turn the camera on.
    2. Press the MENU button on the camera.
    3. Select the tab with the toolbox icon (located farthest right).
    4. Select 3.
    5. Select HDMI 4K Output.
    6. Set output to either 24p or 30p.

If that doesn't work, are you sure you have a 7Q+ and not a 7Q?

Turned out it's the connection of the HDMI cable. It's just super fiddly and loses connection at slightest movement. After finding out I now remembering hearing about that in some review as well. Is this a common thing with the 7Q+? Cable connection (on 7Q+ end) had to be pushed upwards to regain connection every time it got lost... Not very ensuring...

On a different note, I was just recording 1080... But nothing I could do changed the 7Q+ to record in anything but 1080p50*4:2:2. A7S was set to 25p, every setting in the 7Q+ I could find was set to 25p... Still it wouldn't change from 50p... What's up with that?

For the HDMI connection, I recommend the Xtender HDMI Lock for the Odyssey7Q+. It works very well. I also like to use the Sanho HyperThin HDMI cables as they do not torque or otherwise pull on the connection.

The 1080p signal is a quirk of the A7S camera. Even though you are set to 25p it is actually sending 50p with every other frame repeated. If you set the camera to 50i output instead of 50p, and then set it to 1080p25, you will get 25p delivered over 50i, which in reality is 25psf. Ridiculously confusing I know, but it does work.

Ok, I just assumed that the cable that came with the 7Q+ would work, silly me ;)

Thanks for explanation regarding 1080p! Not sure I understand it, so guess I should stick to recording the 4K signal ;)
