A7rii vs A7sii vs Canon 5d3

Just wanted to grab a quick feeler from the community out there. What do you guys think is the best of these cameras in terms of color? Most of the tests online are shot amateurly and with overly amateur color grades, so its hard to tell. Anyone have experience with all of these?

All help very appreciated!

I recommend 5D3 only if your shooting RAW.

A7r II if you want best straight out of camera 4K in my opinion. (Better RS in FF mode, I like the slight softness, crop Super 35 for incredible detail)

A7s II if you shoot only in low light conditions (a7r II has great low light in Super 35) or plan to shoot in S-log constantly and need the Rec709 aid in the viewfinder.

Some love the Canon color so much they go that direction anyway. I don't think it's worth it, and find the color to much.

I have used the 5DMKIII h.264 & RAW for a long time and also the Sony RX10 II & a6300 (not exactly the a7 series but in the same family). I would say it is more about "feel" rather than actual color hue & tone. The Sony cameras give you plenty of color controls to dial in what you want to see. I am a long time Panasonic video camera user and prefer their look. When I got the Sony's I did not know what to expect given I have not cared for Sony cameras in the past. Once I spent the time setting up the Sony's they create pretty much the exact look of my PX270.

The 5D is only good imho if you shoot RAW.

All of this to say in 2016, I think color is comparable between all of the brands. So given the feature set, the Sony's are a great choice.

5D3+RAW is very good 1080p and has the best color I've ever seen on a camera. Then again, even if it's RAW, dynamic range is clearly lower than on the Sonys with either slog2 or slog3. And shooting H.264 it's just too soft, I wouldn't even consider it (my main concern with that one: skin never has texture, even in closeups; you have to go extreme closeup if you don't want people to look like they're made of plastic).

Regarding the Sonys, I support everything geffyb and Bassman2003 said. These are the settings I use, and these are the colors I get in camera.

With the Flaat profile that you use, what's the lowest ISO setting you can use? Is it still 3200?

It depends on the camera, but yes: whatever slog2 allows you to use. IIRC, on the a7S it's 3200, on the RX100 IV it's 1600. On the a6300 I believe it's 800.

I sold my a7S when the II came out, and got the RX100 IV. Good enough for now, and lets me concentrate on stuff other than camera, lenses, filters, etc (I'm a one-man-band 90% of the time, having a zoom with AF and built-in ND lets me concentrate on directing, framing, camera motion, etc). Plus, it's a super awesome little marvel anyway, and being able to shoot 120 fps and 240 fps with great IQ is super fun.

I have my eyes on the a6500, though. If I ever finish deciding between the Sigma 30mm f/1.4, the Zeiss Touit 32mm and the sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS.

Nice, I was just looking at the RX100 V as well. Seems like a good option as well.

The only downside I see on the IV (apart from not shooting 4k 60fps or having slog3, which would be unrealistic on something like this right now) is that AF is not great, specially when shooting 4k or 120 fps. The V seems to sort that one out.
