A7rII USB Power?

I recently tried out a USB power bank on my A7rII and noticed that the on-board battery was still draining at fairly rapid pace - I didn't expect that. Luckily I was able to swap the on-board batteries between takes so it never died on me BUT I thought the whole point of the external battery was to prevent this? Does the USB port not charge as quickly as it drains or did I swap the on-board too soon to see that it really wouldn't have died on me?

From what I understand it is necessary to have an on-board battery because the A7rII won't turn on without it but it's super frustrating.

Am I the only one who has ran into this? Maybe I've got some bad on-board batteries; I just thought if you had USB power running to the camera it would run much, much longer. I think the USB bank I bought has about 10x the capacity.

I have a a7sII, but yes i believe that your experience is normal. The camera receives power from the battery. The USB port will charge the battery, but it does not charge as fast as it drains during video recording. It will last longer, but not indefinite. The only way to do that is to get a dummy battery and regulator and hook that to a stronger battery.

Oh great! I actually didn't know those existed. I'll find one of those, hopefully with USB end so I can use these USB banks I have on-hand. Thank you for your help!
