A7Rii - set of ND filters or variable ND

I've got an Rii, to supplement my FS7 and for gimbal duties.

Largest lens thread is 82mm (24-70 GM), so I'm looking for an 82mm screw-in ND solution with step-up rings for smaller lenses (I need to be able to use without a matte box.)

I've never really done the variable ND thing - should I just go with a variable (which one?) or a set of fixed ND screw-in filters?

If the latter, has anyone been through this pain and landed on a sweetspot set of NDs that covers most scenarios with the A7 cams?

TIA,

Ben.

Variable NDs are a lot more convenient to use, but they can degrade sharpness and cause bigger color casts than regular ND filters. And even if they don't affect sharpness or introduce a color cast, they still are two polarizer filters stacked together, which means they kill reflections; when this happens on skin, they can make people look plasticky.

I've caved and bought a Tiffen VND from Amazon, so I can return if it doesn't deliver. I'll run some tests to see how it looks - at the very least it can give me a reference on the values for solid NDs I'm likely to need for this sensor.

Thanks for the answers,

Ben.

I did a fair bit of research on variable ND filters last year, according to my research, the recent offerings from Tiffen, Genus, SLR Magic are the best relatively affordable options. Sometimes you can find good deals on used ND filters on eBay.

Agree with the Kenko NDX, a better option than the Tiffen IMHO. It exist in two size only (77mm and 82mm). Can be coupled with the Kenko Zeta ND4 or ND8 when shooting in s-log.

I like the Hoya Pro ND filters coupled with the Xume quick change magnetic filter holders, no colour shift and extremely quick to use.
