This utility updates the ILCE-7RM2 system software to version 3.00, and provides the following benefits:
Improvements over version 2.00:
  1. Improves 4K movie recording time when using the vertical grip (VG-C2EM) or when the APS-C/Super35mm mode is activated
  2. Improves picture quality
Benefits provided by previous updates and included in version 3.00:
  1. Adds the selectable feature for uncompressed 14-Bit RAW image capture
  2. Adds support to output video via HDMI during use of the Remote Camera Control software (still mode only)
  3. Reduces the chance of the camera changing to front focus when shooting certain scenes.
    Note: This symptom rarely occurs.
  4. Decreases chroma noise when Long Exposure NR (Noise Reduction) is set to Off.
Note: The noise does not occur when Long Exposure NR is set to On.
  5. Improves continuous shooting at Hi speed so that it can be used just as long when using the flash as without the flash.

Downloading now for the A7SII. Thanks for the heads up. I just wish they would fix the A7RII overheating issue without having to use the battery grip or Super35 mode. It sounds like the FS5 has it's own host of problems recording in 4K.....Sony needs to step it up.

thanks for that.

so 30 minutes first time, 12 minutes if not cooling down longer and you start immediately. That was in super35mm mode according to his description.

What about 4K full frame mode?

Also any ideas how all this compares to a7sII ?

In my experience FF goes longer, but its not as sharp at times. Sometimes you really can't tell the difference, others it much worse. And FF noise gets pretty ugly above 1600, where s35 is clean to much higher ISO's.

So, wait, this DOES fix the overheating issue on the A7RII?!!!!!! This would be (should be) headline news if true.

yeah that's what I want to know now.

I have an opportunity to get a decent deal on A7rii but 15 minutes max and less on 2nd recording time is not very great.

Anyone please have a chance to test this out?

How much longer does A7rii go in FF?

This is weird, on A7rii this guy gets 29 minutes first shot, 12 minutes on second shot -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-6RB1N2C3o

So why is this guy saying only 15 minutes for A7rii during the intro of his video -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0D2_KDm2HDw

This guy says 45 minutes in FF, 27 minutes for super35mm -> http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...-while&p=1986565880&viewfull=1#post1986565880

Remember that conditions and air tempatures can also be a factor. I belive in the 15 minute video the user was filming outdoors in higher tempatures. Either way, it sounds like Sony is trying to alleviate the a7rII overheating issue, but only with the additional handgrip or in APS-C mode. It would be nice if they fixed it in full frame mode as well. I went a7sII because of the a7rII heat issues; it would have been nice to have 42mp for stills.

Thanks for this link, just got my A7S Mark II today and flashed it to firmware 2.0 which is the latest for this camera according to Sony's link. Unfortunately after some quick tests this camera is being returned because the auto focus is terrible compared to my current A7S, have to wait for the Mark III I guess.

Although I rarely shoot anything for this long I get repeated 29 minute clips with my a7rii, no overheating or shut offs with a vertical grip shooting both ff & crop mode.

I've literally never gotten an overheating message on my A7RII and I have recorded nonstop (immediate battery changes and rerolling at 29min) for several hours in S35 4K. I just got an A7SII and just playing with it for a day it seems like it gets a lot hotter than my A7RII has which worries me. I think a lot of it comes down to how well heatsinks are installed and what quality of silicon you happen to get as well as envronmental factors, but from what I've heard there is a really wide range of heat dissipation performance characteristics depending on your particular copy of the camera.

On another note, I might be selling my A7RII that never seems to overheat :) As long the A7SII also passes all my overheating tests...

B&H lists the following for $64:
[h=4]Vello BG-S3 Battery Grip for Sony Alpha a7 II, A7S II &a7R II[/h]If anyone has this grip, can you test it with the new firmware? Thanks.

Maybe it depends on the manufacturing run, the last show we used r2s on they overheated at least a few times a day. These were regularly 5 minute takes back to back in typical narrative fashion.
It's bitter sweet to see Sony finally paying attention to a camera, it's a bummer it never happened with the 1, but it's nice to see new users getting decent treatment.

I had much worse (shorter) shut down times with my A7R II at room temperature and outdoors at 18-22°C:

Shut down after 10-15 min was normal at that temperatures, where I could record "for hours" below 10-15°. I've sold my A7R II so I cannot compare with new firmware.
