A7III thread

Any guys out there using this camera? I am kind of surprised there is so little information out there on it. I know its an 8 bit camera but still. I thought it was kind of a significant release considering how good the auto focus is and that it shoots Full frame uncropped downscaled 6k. I've seen some rolling shutter tests and it seems to be just as good as the GH5 in that area.

I am wondering has anyone actually tested the dynamic range? How much has the color science improved on this?

It's supposedly one of Sony's best selling cameras of all time and it has even pushed back the release of the a7SIII because of them being surprised with the demand (again, supposedly).

Not much traffic about it here but tons on YouTube...it's insanely popular. Dynamic range (for video, not sure about stills) seems the same like the others with S-Log2/3 (a7SII, etc.) but I don't really engage in scientific tests.

As NorBro noted, tons of A7 III video on YouTube. Dynamic range is more than enough, low light looks similar to the A7S II, color science from online demos puts it past the A7S II. Even has decent video AF (almost as good as Canon DPAF, and in a sense better because Sony does eye tracking and Canon does not). Sold out on Amazon and BH Photo for a while. For the money it's a great deal.

I have original a7s and couple weeks a7iii and I must say it is huge improvement.

Extreme lowlight is little bit worse, but still amazing. Color science looks bit better. Battery life is awesome. Ergonomics is better. You can set custom WB in video mode. AF way better. Even though it is only 8 bit, it holds quite good. "My menu" solved searching in menu.

AFAIK, it doesn't do eye-tracking AF in video mode. I've used it for stills on the a7R II and it's amazing, but no Sony camera provides something like that for video yet (dear a7S III please come soon and have this, thanks).

It just does, even recording internally. The fact that the codec is pretty good helps a lot (a good 8-bit codec implementation can easily beat a bad 10-bit codec implementation). Real-world tests are much more useful than specs...

I think the XT2 is also 8-bit. Only Pocket, GH4, GH5 and GH5s do 10-bit at this price point AFAIK (there may be others I'm not aware of, particularly fixed-lens cameras: I don't follow those).

If anyone is looking for an a7III, reach out to Brent at 'Professional Video'.

Don't even hesitate for a second if you're interested in this camera as it's been impossible to find within the last 2-3 weeks (besides an import from eBay).

They are a sponsor here and a great small business in Portland, Oregon. This was supposed to be my camera but I found one locally (and needed it ASAP).

someone did a test with the gh5s and the new a7iii. The gh5s exhibited way better color. The gh5s showed all the different color gradients in the trees and the sony a7iii only showed one. The test was quite striking and made me rethink the gh5s. The sony is just not there yet for color.

Sony colors aren't for everyone, but I don't have a problem with them. They make beautiful cameras.

In one of your previous posts, you mentioned the GH5 has "a sterile look". I haven't been keeping up with them...does the GH5S look much different? (Maybe you just didn't like the dynamic range.)

This camera's dynamic range seems to have gotten so much worse by it's look. It has such a sterile look. very disappointing

Also, would you happen to have a link to the test? Thank you.

link?

In that particular test, they look so similar (to me) that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference if there was no text and both cameras were used on the same project (besides maybe by DOF).

I currently have the GH5 and really wanted to get the GH5s as my second camera. I have pretty much decided to go with the A7III though. Matching cameras can be a ***** but it shouldn't be the end of the world.

The auto focus is really what is selling me. As someone who does really indie stuff it will be tremendously useful.

I've looked at other options for good auto focus, the Canon 7D(Sucky image quality and low light), 5D MkIV( good but expensive and so so image quality and low light compared to Sony), Canon C200(Way out of price range), Canon C100 (auto focus just isn't up to par even with dual pixel upgrade).

Sony seems to have really improved in terms of rolling shutter and the low light is really something to behold. Plus the battery life has improved as well as overheating it looks like.

I'll just be sure to try to get colors and saturation right in camera as I know I won't have as much wiggle room as the GH5.

It's an amazing camera...one of Sony's best.

Having both (a7III/GH5) is nice...I'm sure both will get a lot of use.
