A7III AF-S Question

Been thinking of buying an A7III to upgrade from my A6500. Something that bothers me on my A6500 is that Autofocus-Single (AFS) mode does not function in movie recording. You can either Autofocus Continuous (AFC) or in Manual (M) mode.

One of my favorite features of the A7II was that I could record movies in AF-S mode. I would autofocus before I began recording, and once I achieved focus, it would be locked unless I specifically re-auto focused or manually adjusted the focus ring. The A6500 doesn't allow for this... it's either constantly focus hunting in AFC mode, or in full manual mode.

I'm wondering if the A7III has AF-S in movie mode? I'm not able to find the information online. I know I'm in the minority, as most people seem to love the AFC mode. But I prefer my AF-S method

The A6500 doesn't allow for this... it's either constantly focus hunting in AFC mode, or in full manual mode.

That's weird. I haven't tried the a6500 but usually you can set it to manual focus and set one of the custom buttons to "AF now" (it's not calle that, but I'm not sure if it was "AF on" or "AF/MF ctrl toggle" or something like that).

You can definitely do what Sam suggested on the 6300/6500.

I always programmed the "toggle" as the center/OK button in the scroll wheel and it works perfectly (you have about 15 other buttons you can choose, haha).

It turns the AF on and off at any given time in standby or during recording.

Yes, would be surprised if it wasn’t available on the A6500, I do this all the time on my A7S (and on my FS700, which has a dedicated ‘Push Auto’ button).

That’s my favourite way of working, having Face detection activated and manual focus, but when pressing Push Auto it finds the face and auto focuses...

I have a couple A7III's and I set the AF-ON button to "AF/MF-toggle" in the custom key menu. Then you can just click the AF-ON button to switch back and forth between autofocus and manual. Works fine whether you're recording or not.
