a6300 with Atomos Ninja Assassin?

Hey all,

Anyone tried the a6300 with the Atomos Ninja Assassin? On paper, it looks like the perfect combo. Nice monitor, 4k recording and 1080 120fps. Exactly right for the a6300.

I'm just not sure how the image turns out, what the Assassin does to the image in order to record it?

I'm totally ready to order it, but figure i'd ask just in case there's some reason it's no good! Like if you can't record slog2 for some reason. There's usually a "gotcha!"

Thanks for any feedback

I haven't tried it but I doubt it. Will have to test it if someone else doesn't before me.

Ah, yeah that's the sort of thing im worried about. Buying it and finding i can't record 120fps from the a6300 on it. It's one of my main purposes. Didn't think about the idea that the a6300 may not do 120fps through hdmi.

An external recorder is definitely worth it just to avoid the overheating.

Plus you'll have the 4K 4:2:2, more screen real estate, exposure/focusing tools, LUTs for exposing S-Log2/3, a headphone jack for monitoring audio, etc.

Seems the HDMI output max is 60fps. Even without recording 120fps externally, still very tempted to get the Assassin for all the reasons NorBro said.

OP - if you're strongly considering the Assassin, Adorama has some nice bundled kits. They are all $995...and here's probably the best one, which includes a free 240GB SSD and a mounting arm.

If you search Assassin, you'll see all of them, but the one above is nice...or the one with the SSD and battery instead of the arm if you need power.

I second the PIX E5 suggestion its built like a tank and if you want to add the xlr adapter which I am going to do you have high quality pre-amps. The Assassin feels like a toy and they are not very robust.

I was looking at a 4k recorder for an event this Saturday. With the newer Atomos Flame units still on pre-order, I decided to wait before I buy.

There is likely to be a bit of a glut of used Assassin and Shogun units after the Flame version ship, with people upgrading. I will decide what to buy then, based on what the used prices look like, compared to the Flame and PIX E-5.

In the meantime I will just continue using my Panasonic G7 and Samsung NX500 for internal 4K for the 1+ hour events. The G7 is about $400 used, the NX500 the same or less.

I probably wouldn't keep the A6300, because of the overheating. But the ability to get decent autofocus with a number of my Canon lenses will help to keep the cost down, compared to using my A6000 with mostly Sony lenses, for stills wit AF.

We are finally starting to have a solution to keeping multiple, proprietary lens kits to get decent autofocus for stills. I am going to do the same thing with the G7 and the decent Kipon Canon EF autofocus adapter, and using Nikon lenses and manual focus on the NX500 for video. I wish we had a good Canon AF adapter for that!

Good luck.
