a6300 Lens choices

Hello,

I am considering an a6300 but am not finding a great selection of lenses. I would like an f2.8 stabilized general zoom for light work and interviews as well as a stabilized wide prime for gimble use also f2.8. There seems to be a lot of f4 options out there. But I prefer f2.8 on this sized sensor for SDOF options.

I found a 16-50 f3.5-5.6 stabilized small lens but not the best aperture wise.

Are adapters in the mix or do they all fall down when it comes to video auto focus?

Thanks for your input.

I like the Sony 35mm and 50mm 1.8 OSS lenses (be careful with picking the 50 b/c they also make a non stabilized version). They have sharp modern look that isn't overbearing. And they match well to each other.

Visually the Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8 is very nice. But the A/F sucks compared to the Sonys. And the manual focus blows because you can't use hard stops, so you have to repeat focus moves solely by eye.

I got a dumb Metabones adapter for E mount to Nikon F mount. It works well, but I'm using it with old manual Nikon glass, so I can't give any insight into AF or electronic aperture changing.

I didn't look into zooms, so I also can't give you any advice there.

I have the 35mm 1.8 with my a6300 and really like it, but with an APS-C sensor it's closer to a 55mm. I'm looking at a gimbal to go with it too but afterwards I'm looking into the 24mm 1.8. More like a 35mm lens so I think that'll do better with gimbal work (I don't like the extreme wide angle look).

I'm renting the 24-70 G-Master for some interviews I'm doing tomorrow so I'll post my thoughts on it afterwards. Being double the price of an a6300 I doubt it'd be worth it to buy but $80 for a 2 day rental doesn't seem too bad either.

Thanks for your replies. I think I will use the kit lens for any gimbal shooting and adapt my Canon 50mm f1.4 for interviews. That should cover most of my needs with the least amount of financial commitment. If I absolutely love the camera I can always buy more lenses.

I like the Sigma 30mm 1.4 on the a6300 as my wide but I'm not a fan of really wide lenses so I rarely go over 55-60 degrees (28-24mm on a6300), there really aren't any Image Stabalized wide primes for E-mount yet, the 35/1.8 is the closest we got.

My other favorites are the 90/2.8 OSS Macro and I use the Canon 24-105/4 IS with a metabones speed booster but I'm thinking of replacing that with the Sigma 24-105/4 OS or a Tamron 24-70/2.8 VC ...or just bite the bullet and get the Sony 24-70/2.8.

I would like to warn you though that interviews are generally shot on locked down tripods which should be shot with Image Stablizing turnned off, same for gimble work although I've found IS can be helpful if your gyro motors have micro vibrations.

As a general purpose lens, the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS seems to meet all your requirements. It is not an L-series lens but most people consider it to be on par in pretty much every department (L-series lenses have to be full frame, hence why it does not bear the badge).

If you're willing to spend the money for a Speedbooster you can also go for a 24-105 f/4, which will become a 2.8 lens with the booster. The new version II available soon, but this also means prices will drop on the original version as they start to flood into the used market.
