a6000 gets XAVC-S....NO Rumor! plus new fw for A7/A7R/A7S

Rrrrright. Improvements for the A7/r/s series: Faster startup times.
Frankly, I'd be ashamed to release a firmware "update" with such "features".

But maybe there are things added that are not mentioned? Someone please report after testing.

XAVC-S on the a6000 is a big update, it finally settles the a5100 vs a6000 debates we've seen in many threads around here: now there's a better camera and a cheaper camera

For the a7 series yes, it seems this is pretty much a bigfix release. Those are important too, but I probably won't even install it.

that.

The A6000 has been rated best bang for buck camera by just about every reviewer. Adding XAVC S makes it an even better buy.

so it seems like cards smaller than 64gb do not work for xavc-s, A7s users here, which cards do you use? any budget recommendations?
I have 2 - 128gb komputer bay cards. definitely overkill, but like the same price of other brands 64gb cards. some people have had bad experiences, but so far they're going strong for me. (i have had 1 CF card show up dead, they replaced it quickly).

v1.10 for A7s also improved startup time. Which was quite a big difference from 1.00. So this one speeds up startup times even further? It's a welcome thing. Something more exciting would have been nice, but not quite sure what that would be? (except for rather major things that I know won't happen)

Now, if Sony could add XAVC-S on the FS700, I would love them forever...

This was pretty much the only reason I returned the A6000 and got the 5100. Though the touch screen shutter/AF is nice too.

New features makes me think a new model is right around the corner, Sony is trying to squeeze as much as possible out of buyers before blowing them out and introducing the 4k APS-c body.

Re: cards
I'm using this PNY one, and the 128 GB equivalent one (which, at 5.5 hours of capacity, is overkill for anything except recording a live event or a long vacation). No trouble with them whatsoever.

Just did the update. Actually, WOW! Startup time is now pretty damn instantaneous! v1.10 made a slow start usable, and this one makes it really impressive. Could have used this when I filmed some friends wedding recently, which during the whole day meant switching the camera on and off a lot.

Exciting update featurewise, maybe not. But very useful in certain circumstances, absolutely.

Would love if my FS700 started half this fast! (and had XAVC-S) ;)

Hi guys, first post here with a question:
Once that 30 and 60 fps are both 50Mbps (in XAVC-S), does it means that we have more quality in 30 fps?
Like.. in 1 second, we will divide 50Mb through more or less frames, right?

I've tried to test, but no technical studio here :)

Thanks!

Chances are they will be very similar, and the reasoning is around it being a long-GOP codec.

It's likely that the I-frames will be the same TIME apart (typically 1/2 sec), which means twice as many FRAMES between successive I-frames. But the latter are difference frames, which are small in size compared to I-frames - and you still only have 2 I-frames/second. So for comparable quality, I wouldn't expect much change in data rate between the two.

In theory 60p will break sooner, and in practice you'll probably be able to find scenarios where it does (even in real-world shooting), but they are very close to each other, since you're going to have less variation from frame to frame at 60p than at 30p, so, less info to store (another way to see what harddrive was talking about).
