A year with the FS100: recap

Wow, time sure flies when you're having fun! I've had my FS100 for a year now, so time to make reels and lookback on the S35 box on the cheap... I upgraded from the Canon 550D. Lovely little wonder, but I wanted a more serious filmmaking tool(partly because of clients asking what's up with the photocamera!), having XLR and headphones right in the camera, better IQ and beter handeling. A year ago there where 2 choices, the AF100 or the FS100. The Sony was a more logical choice for me, seeing as the Canon and the Sony have near identical chip-size. First I was stuck with a dumb EF adapter, but upgraded quickly to the Metabones v2 when it came around. Also went for the Canon 24-105L as my run&gun lens and the Samyang 35 & 85mm as my DoF machines. Excellent combo's and I still have the Tamron 17-50mm, if I need to go wider than the Canon. This is for me the perfect combination. I love the FS100! It takes some getting used to the quircky button lay-out, but you get used to it. I was suprised by the build quality, thought it was more plasticky, but mine has seen quite a beating and is still in mint condition. I love the low light abillity and the 108050p. Frank's excellent G-Log Ultimate squeezes every drop of IQ out of it. If there's one thing I'm still missing it's built-in ND's. Fiddeling with a mattebox and 4x4's is annoying when I'm shooting a wedding.... Alas, that's one of the perks of the FS700 or the C100, or maybe a FS200 in the future..

I mostly do corporate stuff for the web, weddings and the occasional short film. The FS100 handles it all just fine. Here is my corporate(there's a bit of music video in there) reel and my wedding reel, all done on the FS100.

Holy crap Jeroen! I just watched your corporate reel and pretty awesome work!! I'm saving up for the FS100, so i'm glad to hear that the camera has worked out great for you.

Cheers,
Dave

Like! :-D

You've really got the FS100 under control. But then again, we're watching the reel, it's an ad for you not an ad for the camera, which is really important. LOL!

Good work.

You have some awesome shots in there Jeroen. Good work.
Glad you find my PP useful, always love to see what folks make out of it.

best, Frank

Just owned mines a few months ago and so far loving it, great examples of real world shooting scenarios! Love the Corp work looks amazing, especially the slo-mo (very smooth).

Nice work and thanks for sharing. I echo all your comments about the build of the camera. The 550D was wonderful, but eventually it had to go for me in a professional setting.

I really like the table shots starting round the 40 second mark. The lighting is great.

My only critique is your logo seems oddly similar to the Howard Stern "raised fist". (But don't worry, he's not litigious) Or have you not heard of him in the Netherlands?

I noticed that 'fist' logo as well, since I used to be a big Stern fan. I do know that Howard Stern lifted his logo from another source. In fact, on his move to Sirius he talked about one of his associates 'designing' this logo for him. He's too cheap to hire a real ad firm to design a logo for him.

Dave

Wow, what a lot of response! Thnx for the kind words all! As for the fist logo, I had no idea who Howard Stern was haha. I googled him and see what you mean. I've used the stylized fist logo for 4 years now and have seen a couple of similiar logo's. I've based the logo on the stylized fist that was popular in Sovjet propeganda back in the day.

Looking good.

To me the exceptional colour is the restaurant with the salmon - can you tell a little about that shoot? Real skins.

Hi Sam, I shot the wide shot in that scene on the Samyang 35mm and the close-ups on the 85mm. I bounced a Kino 4ft 4Bank into the ceiling, using 3200K bulbs. Shot with the G-Log Ultimate PP and graded in MB Looks. That's it!

Well done, sir! What are you using for glass? My biggest issue right now is wondering what glass to get. With the new Touit Zeiss lenses out and people talking about vintage lenses, I am confused. Right now I only have the Sony 16mm and 50mm e mount lenses. Thanks!

Very nice, I like it. Your a good lighter and DP.

I'm also very content with the FS100. Especially when I have the time/budget to light on a job.

The FS100 did made me think more about lighting properly. Because if you do it wrong the skincolors get weird (magenta mainly). That's the achilles of this camera. But you manage to have it under controle.

I mostly use the skincollor profile in uncontroled enviroment.
Controled enviroment I use ferrari profile or a cine profile like glen's or others.

Chapeau

Looks great RebelFilm good work, but if you used a Kino 4Bank into the ceiling how did you avoid dark shadows under the eyes? You didn't have a key light anywhere also, just curious as it does looks very nice?

Cant copy paste the link on my Phone now. So Google "fs100 skin tone pp" and you wil find it.

Hey Gary, sorry for the late reply. Yes, only the Kino. Put it as close as possible to the talent, without being in the frame. Opened up the flaps completely and used all the banks at max power.

Really nice work dude!

Which version of G-Log do you use? I still get confused, which is now the best for a later correction, as
there is more than one version...

Thanks for the reply!
