A webisode I did audio on....and let me have it.

Hey, being the sacrificial lamb here. Decided, I have critiqued enough other people's work, and time for you guys to return the favor (READ: GET YOUR REVENGE, LOL).

Opening scene: yes, it's got a bit too much ambient/bg noise. Considering the sound budget, I couldn't go rent lavs. So I used my H4n, Rolls mixer and my Senn ME64 mic. True Low Budget goodness. Had nothing to do with post, nor editing.

But have some fun laying into me.

Yes, I have a hairy lip, but I recently shaved the goatee off for another film, so it is "hairy lip", not lips.

Had to look "cop" for my SWAT Team Leader role for the photoshoot. Goatee gone.

ok let's go in detail :-p

first shot: it looks like those kind of shots where a DP would say "I'm framing veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery large and a "inexperienced sound-guy" would boom miles above. But large and "height" are different things. I can hear you went as close as possible.

I can hear some kind of "continuity" in sound. Did you do that ? For example for the close ups you were a bit higher then you could to keep it continue with the larger shots ?

0:28, she's a little bit to low (but that's something in post) I can hear the background go lower... I guess 2 dB

00:30 "we should take it", it hears like you're a little bit more on the girl then on the guy ? His line

00:32 "Marty help me get in", you forgot to follow him ? it sounds a bit "off" here and Marty (the girl) sounds more "on" (although with distance and some reverb of the wall left because of the frame)

00:37 serine, then it's inter-cut so no siren and then siren again
although at 1:18 the siren is continuing in the other shot....

1:22 "after you", it seems he speaks very low ?

1:32 "carefull carefull", it hears this is border of "distortion"

What mic did you use inside ? :-p

Critique the video or your sound chops?

BG: Fill'er up. The dialogue recording sounds fine to me, just the usual proximity effect happening during CU and Wide shots and back into the house. Nothing unusual.
TV: Certainly creative with how you designed this. I say work with this specific sequence to get it really authentic and danger-like with the flashes and beeps. Oops, you didn't do post.
DX: Smooth out the endges. Any chance you could have used a ME66 rather than the ME64?

LOL, guys, I provided the set audio, nothing else. No post work, no effects.

But reminds me of a thread about demo reels for audio guys and the reasons they are really not valid.

More directivity would have been better on the EXT shots. An advice I always give to students is to mix with the boom on set when knowing that post would be handled by an inexperience sound person. It's even more important when you only have one microphone throughout the entire production. Matching dialogue isn't always about getting it close in every shot, but to allow room for the dialogue to breathe between shot to shot.

Good chops Mr. Doc.
